In a referendum held on 1st and 2nd December, Edinburgh University Students’ Association students voted marginally to join the National Union of Students. 3457 votes were cast with 1811 voting to affiliate and 1646 voting to remain disaffiliated. 21% of Edinburghs’ 16,000 students turned out to vote.
The move means that Edinburgh, which has not been part of the NUS for over 25 years, will join NUS and NUS Scotland – a move that should be ratified by the NUS conference in April. EUSA President Steve Cockburn, came out in favour of the decision, saying that “we are really pleased that students have been able to make this choice and decide themselves the direction of the student movement,” adding, “students need strong representation now more than ever to protect their rights, welfare and convey their positive contribution to society, and we very much look forward to working with the NUS to achieve that.”
Edinburgh was one of the few universities with a students’ union that was not affiliated to the national union. Imperial College students voted overwhelmingly to remain disaffiliated in 2002.
