Rumours circulated mechanical engineering last week that the departmental library and adjacent study area are to be closed, possibly to make space for faculty staff offices, and in response over 500 students have signed a petition against the closure which has been sent to the head of department, Prof. Smith, and to Engineering Faculty Principal Dr Julia King.
The petition, written by the Mech. Eng. Departmental Representative Helen Dawson, noted that the library is very valuable to the mechanical engineering students and staff for research purposes because of its location and how it is staffed. The service provided could not be replicated in the central library because it is too large so staff could not be expected to have as detailed knowledge as is currently available. This would severely limit the use of the papers currently held in the library as it would be near to impossible to find the relevant documents.
Currently journals are not allowed to leave central library but the mechanical engineering library allows students to take them out for a short period, it is thought that this valuable facility will be lost and plans to continue to increase the range of books to include those on bioengineering would be scrapped. A recent Undergraduate Students Committee Review stated that it is “vital to the course to have our own resources”.
The large reading room adjacent to the library is also rumoured to be in the line of fire having been singled out as being underused. However, as the room is next to the Tanaka building there has been a lot of noise from the building work for the last 2 years and it is claimed that the room has been at 60% capacity for a lot of the time since Tanaka has been completed. The reading room is preferable to the library and any other work area in mechanical engineering (of which there are few) as it has natural light and is kept quiet and at a sensible temperature throughout the year. The petition notes that the room is used more during exam periods: since the end of the building work there has not been an exam period.
