Guilds and Mines in Agreement

Jan 19 2005 12:54

C&G and RSM have settled their differences regarding representation to the CGCU Executive and Engineering Chapter Board.
Oh RSM, Oh RSM.....

The City & Guilds College Union has struck a deal with the Royal School of Mines Clubs and Societies Committee to resolve a year-long, sometimes bitter dispute over a new alumni committee that, in the words of CGCU President John Collins, "Has probably wasted more time than any other political issue I’ve had to deal with this year, which in a strange way is highly amusing because this committee hardly has any affect on the day to day lives of students!"

The row erupted this time last year following the formation of a new college committee, dedicated to fostering links between the two alumni associations of the Faculty of Engineering, which are the Guilds-biased CGCA and Mines-biased RSMA. Under the banner "Imperial College Engineering Student Union," CGCU are invited to send two representatives to this meeting, but in the past the RSM students have been left out. The reasoning had been taken from the CGCU Executive, which until recently had no official RSM Representation.

Following the passing of a memorandum of understanding between the CGCU, who approved it last Thursday, and the RSM Clubs and Societies Committee, who approved it yesterday (Wednesday), and structural changes making the RSM President an Officer of CGCU, the RSM President will be able to attend this alumni meeting later on this year. The agreement then states that, should a future CGCU President come from an RSM Department, the second representative will be the most senior CGCU officer from a C&G, non-RSM department.

Additionally, all Departmental Representatives will be allowed to share the Guilds Executive votes of the corresponding Departmental Society Chairs, which now means that representation from Materials and ESE will be achieved from the Departmental Representatives, without the need to dismantle the historic structures of Mines and Guilds by moving those Departmental Societies.

Structural changes passed by the CGCU Executive on Monday also include the establishment of a new Guilds Events Committee, building on the role of C&G Active but with added financial and decision-making powers.

Office counting machines can not write articles. If we have issues with people presenting papers they havn't written (that never happens in Guilds now does it???!!!"!"!"!111111), then perhaps the issues are the same with fauclty media.

Sorry, correction, I meant faculty union media.

Aliases are not a problem becasue they are not impersonating a figure of greater authority.

Except perhaps in this case- maybe we should set up a poll on whether students see Mustafa or the Coin-Sorters as having greater authority within the Union...

Don't underestimate Jemima. Perhaps Jeremy is incapable of writing an article, but Jemima is a female and therefore vastly more capable.

(That's not a general sexist remark, it only applies to motorised coin-sorters and Faculty Welfare Officers.)

Does anyone else find it curious how President Collins is eagerly presenting this immense climb-down on the chapter board as an achievement?

The Engineering Chapter Board, completely pointless and useless as it is, is still a body to which students are represented. The C&G Union President is a student representative, the RSM CSC Chair is not.

The RSM Chair is a student representative- OK, they're now a student activities representative rather than an academic or welfare rep, but still an elected representative of students.

UIf the board already has the RSMA as well as the CGCA then why weren't student following suit in the first place? And would the RSMA really be as interested in supoprting C&G as RSM students/activities? If keeping the RSMA happy means more money/support for students in total, that's far more beneficial to students than C&G thumbing their noses at RSM and saying, "We're bigger than you and we say both places are ours so there!" Willingness to compromise isn't always the sign of weakness.

Faculty of Engineering students' academic, welfare and inter-faculty representation is conducted through CGCU.

Faculty of Engineering departmental society and traditional activity representation is conducted through CGCU and RSM CSC.

This is why CGCU represents all FoE students to the College's Engineering Studies Committee, ICU Academic Affairs Committee and ICU Executive, but BOTH CGCU and RSM CSC represent FoE students to the College's Exploration Board, ICU Council and ICU Student Activities Committee.

Ask yourself this question: Do Alumni affairs come under academic representation or activity representation?
