If Music Be the Food of Love…

Feb 08 2005 14:43
Ruth Davies
It’s that time of year again, dreaded by “singletons” everywhere, it’s Valentine’s Day which means that (as it’s RAG Week) it’s time to surprise your favourite person with a Barbershop Quartet.
Ahhh! Isn't it sweet!

The RAG Barbershop Quartets have been going for some years now and have serenaded many a happy couple. Past notable targets (presumably not due to love) have included the Rector and various lecturers.

In the last two years, under the able organisation of Tom Elliott, the quartets have flourished so that they now rehearse even outside the run up to RAG Week. This reporter went along to one of their rehearsals to get a sneak preview.

This year there are two Barbershop Quartets consisting of Dan Young and Robert Felstead (tenor), Tom Elliott and Michael Tourville (lead), Duncan Richmond and Ewan Crosbie (baritone) and Seb Junemann, Andrew Daly and John Collins (bass). They are singing a selection of songs including “I Love You Truly” and “Love Me Tender”. This reporter was particularly impressed by their musicality and excellent close harmony.

Speaking as a recipient of a Barbershop Quartet last year, this reporter can confirm that it is a horribly embarrassing experience, but also one of the nicest things a boyfriend (or unacknowledged admirer) can do - at least in front of your entire year in a lecture theatre!

To book a Barbershop Quartet to serenade your loved one go to http://www.union.ic.ac.uk/rag/valentines/ or contact . A serenade costs £10 and includes a rose that is presented to your loved one. They are available for booking on Monday the 14th February but also other days by arrangement.

Feb 08 2005 22:43

Maybe if you didn't think of women as objects to be acquired, you'd have more success ;)

Honestly Sanjeev, you've got £1k, surely you can find a girlfriend with that.

Well I haven't got a boyfriend at the moment if anyone should book a quartet to sing to me he would of course be considered...

ummm, i think its sweet.....people should be more impulsive in what they do, if u cant do it on V day when would you, after all if anyone wants to go crazy it should be on valentines' day!!!!

it would be sooo much more fun if the guys were topless or half NAKED!!!! YEAH BABY!!! i would definatly be up for it!!!

Feb 10 2005 23:47

Ummm sorry Sabrina, I really wouldn't like have to defend myself in court. If I was half naked and singing there would be a lot of casualties.

After the pandemonium at the slave auction, I'm sure we could drum up a quartet for an unconventional request or two. Maybe not topless, but you can be imaginative.

he he he!!! dont tempt me! my immagination if allowed to run wild would put me it a lotta trouble!!!

or maybe u could get sexy chicks going around in very naughty outfits, it was proven in the past that students are very generous in that kinda situation and not just with money...who cares he?!?!?! ITS FOR A GOOD CAUSE!

Feb 11 2005 15:22

Mr Baritone i'd have to see you to beleive you, and dont worry about me beeing counted as one of your casualties, i have very high standards! =p

Feb 11 2005 15:52

I think you'll find Mr Baritone's commments were self-deprecating so you'd need low standards (baritone - low, see what I did there...)

Anyway I'm sure you'll be able to find people willing to follow in the C&G Presidents footsteps and get them off for a good cause (charity or otherwise)

Time's running out boys...

Oh and baritone I definitely don't want to see you singing naked, I know who you are...

Feb 14 2005 17:44

I'm most offended ruth. Was going to book ourselves for you this evening but I think I shall have to reconsider.

I told the RAG Chair I'd write an article about the valentine quartets again but seeing as I can't think of anything to say except what I said last year I'll just bring them to the top of the discussion again and remind people to contact to book a quartet to serenade their loved one.

Hey Baritone,

Are you going to book one of these for me this year...?

Feb 07 2006 14:53

Well that depends my dear.

I'm subject to harsh buget constraints this year and have also been told that I'm going to be spending the evening of the 14th Febrary alone. Hence it may not be worth my while.

Feb 13 2006 15:05

Well boys if you wanna avoid her bad books tomorrow you better book your serenades now as the quartets are already out looking for running shoes just to be able to meet demand across the campus!

Just email to arrange your hit!
