Readers with a good memory may remember voting in ICU council elections a while ago and those more interested in union hackery may have wondered when we would get to hear the results.
The delay in the results has been caused by the need to consider 2 complaints regarding the use of email lists in campaigning. Candidates are not allowed to use union email lists as part of their campaigning and are clearly warned that doing so will result in disqualification, therefore it is necesary to investigate such allegations. It is also believed that the emails only listed a subset of candidates rather than a comprehensive list.
A paper to be heard at the executive of ICU informs the reader that complaints were received and investigated by interviewing the candidates involved and analysing the voting patterns and emails with ICT.
The paper goes onto state:
"Having identified that the following candidates either instructed the senders to campaign on their behalf, or were aware that the senders were campaigning for them, the Executive felt it had no choice but to disqualify:
Tanvirul Alam, Omar Hashmi, Sagir (Haji) Hassam, Mustaffa Junaid and Shazad Khalid."
All other candidates were cleared as having not been aware or in control of emails been sent on their behalf and thus no further action was taken.
