Imperial hit by Foot & Mouth

Parts of Wye campus closed as ‘precautionary’ measure in response to outbreak.
Wye's Farm Estates have been closed off due to the outbreak.

Imperial's outward agricultural campus at Wye has been affected by the outbreak of Foot & Mouth Disease (FMD). Students living in farms are being told to spend at least 5 days away from the farm before returning to College after the vacation. This means those students will have to find their own temporary accommodation (outside halls) before coming back after Easter. Furthermore students who enter "exclusion areas" (such as those undertaking field work) will have the quarantine period extended to 7 days.

It is as yet unknown how these exclusions will be enforced. There is a worry that some students who cannot afford to find temporary accommodation might simply ignore the restrictions. The Wye Campus in Ashford, in Kent, has several acres of farmland occupied by livestock, used mainly for teaching and research purposes. Should the animals become infected with FMD, Imperial stands to lose several hundred pounds.

College have closed access to Wye Farms Estate, until further notice. All students are being asked to provide emergency contact information for the Easter vacation. It is understood that if the FMD outbreak gets any worse, the whole Wye Campus will be sealed off. Indeed rumours are circulating that College have already begun making arrangements for a possible relocation of Wye students to South Kensington.

No joy there, Silwood has no livestock (or at least it didn't when I was surveying last year).

Anyway the Survey Course is great fun and it is also a requirement for the Imperial MEng degree to have one if it is to be accreditted by The Institution of Civil Engineers (kinda necessary if you want to become Chartered).
