Last night saw ICU council considering a paper to ban smoking in the entire union building from 1st June 2006. The issue had been widely publicised, including two articles in Felix and one on Live! and surprisingly it had appeared to attract the views of ordinary students. Over 75% of people replying to "yoursay" had been for the paper, and a straw poll in the JCR and SAF conducted last term, had had a similar result.
Tim Aplin (DPF&S), spoke against the paper, saying that whilst he personally supported a complete ban, commercially it was a bad idea, and he could not support the paper because of this.
The ICU president tried to table an amendment to exclude the union bar and the UDH (which is used for functions, and Shisha on Wednesday and Friday nights), but councillors decided by a clear majority that they were not happy with this, and it failed to be accepted.
A final amendment which received support from the paper's writers, was to ban smoking in the entire building but exclude the UDH from the proposal. This would allow Shisha nights to continue until next summer, when the UK smoking ban will put an end to it. The point that the MOU states that "profit motives should not be pursued to the detriment of the interests of the student customers", was also raised at the meeting.
The award for the most amusing person at council goes to Mr Aplin, whom unhappy that the paper had been passed, returned to council with some Shisha. He then proceeded to enjoy the UDH's exemption until being politely asked by the council chair (following a short straw poll of people in the room), to take his Shisha out of the meeting.
