After many rumours surrounding possible departmental mergers in the Faculty of Engineering, it seems that Mech Eng and Aero could be the first.
As reported at the end of a previous article, plans are already underway for a new building to house parts of both departments next to the Tanaka business school. Instead of just sharing space, the departments have now been asked to produce possible options for a merged department, which will probably not be called "Mechanautical Engineering".
There has been pressure to reduce the number of departments in the faculty, with EEE and Computing being suggested as another alternative for merger. In Life Sciences a reduction in departments was achieved by abolishing them altogether - in Engineering this is unlikely but an alternative would be the long-discussed common first year.
A former Scientist commented "[Engineering] is all just maths now anyway".
