After a decision by Union Council at the start of this month, the Union's bars are now all non-smoking. Implementation of the ban was slightly complicated by it being sports night on 31st May - a literal interpretation of the paper passed at Council would have required smoking to be halted at midnight, as it states simply that the ban takes effect "from the 1st of June 2006", without considering the late license.
Trading figures will be closely monitored to assess the impact of the ban, although the bars have been doing exceptionally well of late. In a report to Council last week, DPFS Tim Aplin revealed that the South Kensington bars are currently running at 30% over their expected income for the year.
The Union Bar, arguably the nicest bar on campus, should now have much improved air quality. On busy nights the use of fog-lights and respiratory apparatus would probably have been advisable, as poor ventilation allowed the build-up of smoke in the room.
