I use my student oyster and I still have to pay the usual oyster rate, whats the point in having a student oyster if I still pay the usual oyster rate? Someones ripping me off, either TfL or the shopkeeper.

You'll pay the same on single fares, the discount (currently) only applies to period tickets. Make sure you ask for a student weekly/monthly/annual ticket and double check the price...

You might be able to renew your 16+ card. The following conditions apply:

"18 year olds who meet all the following criteria can also apply for a 16+ Oyster photocard:

• You were under 19 on the 31 August prior to the start of the academic year
• You live in London
• You are in full-time education*"

You can get application forms from the post office for the 16+ card.

If you don't qualify for this, you might be able to get the 18+ card. See the following page on the TfL site: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/oysteronline/photocards/18plusstudents/2976.aspx

I collected an application form from the Post Office, filled it in, took it to the college my son will be attending, got is signed, validated etc. He has just been informed by the post office which gave him the form, that, the form they gave him is invalid. We have to go through the process again, Travelling from London to Twickenham for another validation. What in the name of all that is sane is TfL about. Changing the forms is rubbish as no new information is required anyway. Get your act together, why should we pay another £5 to start this process, which we will go through again?

I filled an application on 3rd of September. I called to chase it up on 11th Sept and only to confirme it is lost in transit by the post office even though I took it personally to the post office counter to be checked as requested on the form.

I was then told to send in another form with my son's photo, enclosed my last receipt. When I called to chase this up again I was told I have to pay and fill in a separte form. Now this is so inefficient as I am paying £7.20 daily from Waterloo to Twickenham because they would not sell him a child ticket witout the oyster card

Can you please advice me on what to do because I can not continue with fares or speed up my application.

Depends which photo card you're talking about - this site is for students at Imperial College (despite all the other bizarre queries) so we know about the 18+ student oyster card.

Are you trying to get the 16+ Oyster or the 11-15 Oyster? I presume 16+, in which case you'll just have to wait and try and claim back the money from TfL on the basis that the post office screwed up.

If you are registered online and have your CID, then online registration for the student oyster card should work. However, it gets delivered to your term-time address, so you need to know which halls you are staying in and your room number.

You might get away without your room number, but its at your own risk :)

You need to be on a course for at least 14 weeks to get the card, so you're probably out of luck.

2007-2008 cards will be valid until 14th October 2008 so that'll be a bit more helpful for people...

I agree with Vishal. Me and other of my collegues are not happy with the system at all. For my understanding all the Masters courses in UK starts in September and finishes in the mid of October with the final announcement. In addition we have our graduation ceremony in December which would be the official day that we recieve our certificates. In relation to that until December we are all considered as full time students which means we can not work on a full time base. Therefore I do not understand on what bases we have to pay the full amount for our travel while still we are considered as students. Basically, I do not think Vishal was unlucky one but Vishal was one of the many other millions of Masters students.

Simple. As full time students we're second class citizens.

Taken me a few years to come to that conclusion, but now I'm pretty happy with it.

Jane, I'm not sure which course you are coming from, Just because your graduation ceremony hasn't been held does not mean you are still a student and can't work. You cease being considered a student as soon as your course ends. Otherwise all Imperial students on any undergrad course would still be 'students' until late October....

This is absolutely ridiculous! I have been trying the online application for days..

i had to pay full fee for the last month because nothing seems to work here.

The last 2 semeser I had to wait for the applicaton form, therefore I had to pay full fee for a month. Now is the same story but with the "new and great" applicaton online system!!!

I am a February starter so on top of all these I have to apply twice a year and pay the £5 twice. If the application does not work smoothly (and it never does) than in between I even pay the whole fare!

I think it's pretty unfair the 18+ student card doesn't stretch to day-travelcards and pay-as-you-go journeys. I have complained the TfL and Ken Livingstone, and suggested improving the scheme for students to Boris Johnson (who has a good chance of being the next mayor I reckon). If you feel strongly enough about improving the scheme I urge you to all point it out to thee groups, and maybe they'll get the message that the current discount is inflexible and poor value!!

Oh and I'm having problems accessing the site too. Can't they get ANYTHING right?! :-( !!!

Firstly its not LU staffs problem, they can only sell you the tickets your entitled to. No student oyster, no discount.

Why don't you all step back and be thank full that you can actually get a discount when the system works? Spare a thought for all those full fare paying commuters have to put up with you lot complaining about not getting enough discount whilst you take up just as much space in a packed train...

As to why you have to apply every year its to combat the number of drop outs who change course all the time, obvious really, not even the NUS trusts students enough to issue them a card valid for the duration of their initial planned course....

Rather than paying £10 a day, why don't you all get a normal Oyster while you're waiting? If it costs £19.10 for a week with the discount, it would only be about £30 without. This would be less than your current costs per day...

Guys - don't put your personal details on this discussion board. This is not the TfL Oyster Card help website. This is an online student newspaper for students of Imperial College. The editor has done his best to be informative, but he's nothing to do with TfL so you're asking the wrong people for advice here.

You can't apply online if your college does not appear in the list. Use a paper form.

Step one for approx 50% of those posting is to read the previous replies and the article and realise what Live! is and the real purpose of these discussion areas.

Step two is for you to learn to write, and probably speak, at least something that resembles english so that when you complain to the correct people (it might be worthwhile trying TfL here) they may listen to you.

The online application service is currently overworked and resting, according to TFL's website announcement. I have to say to TFL:

You knew the new term starts in Sept/Oct, as it does every year. You knew how many students were projected to start their new terms in London. You knew how many might apply for an Oyster student card. You had an asymmetrical amount of information in your favour. You knew all this.

SO WHY IN THE HECK DID YOU NOT PREPARE YOUR SERVERS FOR THE "EXCEPTIONALLY HIGH LEVEL OF DEMAND"?

What happened to the PhD write up "students" being awarded a student discount on the Oystercard?

I really hope that this has been sorted now. Back in 2005 when I was writing up, I was up the sh*ts creek, I had write up status but my travel suddenly became a lot more expensive, which really hurt at a time when my funding had run out as well. The issue made it all the way to TfL and they declined the idea of giving discounts to write up students.

I really hope this is fixed now.....

TfL changed it. The one above now works and can cope with the load it is receiving.

Oh dear, it's got a seriously screwed up SSL certificate. (Expired, wrong site name, etc.) I would personally be very hesitant to put anything sensitive (like debit card numbers) into any forms..

It's impossible to get the "online application form" loading.

we feel we should be able to use our oyster card on single fairs, it's unfair that it is only restricted to period tickets because not all of us need to travel everyday of the week. can you not do something where we can atleast get some discount on single tickets. single fairs cost a hell of lot as it is especially at peak times. we're only students!!!

Got to say that I disagree with you.

If you don't need to travel everyday of the week it means that you can afford to live near enough to college, and as such don't need to use TFL (afterall this monthly discount is effectively a subsidy on housing costs).

If you want to use TFL for leisure, then we, like everyone else, should expect to pay for it.

My student oyster just stopped working one day last year and there was no surface damage and nobody at the station could tell me why. I had 5 days of a travelcard on it which i needed to cross town every day for work.. I asked at the cash desk for them to check my records to see that I had payed for at least that days travel in the hope that they would just give me a temporary card to use until a new one arrived. However, they said that no such records were kept and there was no way of proving that my broken Oyster was still holding 5 days of travel. So, I was made to buy another travel card at full price. Or at least asked to.. I didn't have that much cash on me (that's students for you) so I had to go and find the money from somewhere and ended up in trouble at work for being late, and suffering a seriously decreased food budget for the rest of the week.

So. Why aren't these records kept if you keep records on my movements?

The answers obvious of course.. you can do me for fare evasion with a record of my movements to refer to.. by if you keep a record or what i've paid for you might have to reimburse me which is pointless when you can just charge me twice.

and whilst im on a roll about your money grabbing ways.. how many millions have you made in the past two weeks by sending out student oysters (applied for 3 to 4 weeks a go) late??

Oyster cards don't make you pay every year. You do however have to pay for an annual student travel discount card which comes as an oyster card varient if you qualify for one.

Whilst a student railcard which you also have to pay for annually is just a cheap bit of card with your photo on it...

Then how do you intend to travel on public transport?

If you don't touch in you may be liable for a penalty fare, if you don't touch out you'll likely be charged a ridiculous amount (and quite rightly so).

It looks like you can only apply online if you live outside London. If you live inside you have to pick up a form from your school (if they have them) or at your local post office.
