Student Oyster Applications Online

Sep 19 2006 13:01
The Dark Knight
TfL Student Oyster cards can now be ordered and paid for online.
You too can have a student Oyster card

Long queues for validation of TfL student photocard forms are hopefully over, with an online application form available this year. Returning students can also order their cards before they arrive back at College, as long as they register using the Registry's online registration system beforehand.

Imperial students have typically had to pay full rate fares for their first few weeks back in College, as cards expire on 30th September before term starts. Long queues form in Sherfield for a week with students getting forms stamped.

Curiously, the paper forms are being advertised all over the college, with no mention of the online system so far.

In order to take part you will need to supply a digital photograph with very strict properties - if you do not TfL are likely to keep your money and make you pay £5 again.

Last year's Oyster screw-up - where the Registry changed their stamp slightly so TfL were rejecting applications - will hopefully be avoided with the online system.

It's ridiculous that these cards expire and we're expected to pay for them every year.

Sep 26 2006 14:09

Hi, I'm a journalist and I've been noticing that lots of students have been having problems with their oyster cards. I am doing some research on this story and would like to hear from people who are unsatisfied with the TFL services. If you are one of these people and would like to hear from you. please email me at . thanks, Dany

I use my student oyster and I still have to pay the usual oyster rate, whats the point in having a student oyster if I still pay the usual oyster rate? Someones ripping me off, either TfL or the shopkeeper.

Aug 30 2007 21:59

You'll pay the same on single fares, the discount (currently) only applies to period tickets. Make sure you ask for a student weekly/monthly/annual ticket and double check the price...

my oyster card to due to expire at end of sept 07, i now need to get the 18+ oyster card but noone knows where i get it from, can you help me, iwant be able to pay the full adult priced because my colledge is far from my house. i am desperate

You might be able to renew your 16+ card. The following conditions apply:

"18 year olds who meet all the following criteria can also apply for a 16+ Oyster photocard:

 • You were under 19 on the 31 August prior to the start of the academic year
 • You live in London
 • You are in full-time education*"

You can get application forms from the post office for the 16+ card.

If you don't qualify for this, you might be able to get the 18+ card. See the following page on the TfL site: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/oysteronline/photocards/18plusstudents/2976.aspx

All the information you should need is available on the website...

Sep 03 2007 10:50

I collected an application form from the Post Office, filled it in, took it to the college my son will be attending, got is signed, validated etc. He has just been informed by the post office which gave him the form, that, the form they gave him is invalid. We have to go through the process again, Travelling from London to Twickenham for another validation. What in the name of all that is sane is TfL about. Changing the forms is rubbish as no new information is required anyway. Get your act together, why should we pay another ?5 to start this process, which we will go through again?

Sep 03 2007 13:54

Welcome to London! Anything in London which is form related always reminds me of Kafka's The Castle ...

"If you live in a council estate, that is not next to a river, but have 3 children, at least 2 of whom are male and own a car, please use the space below to give us your mothers maiden name and place of birth"

Um do you realise there is a link in this article that you can click on if you wish to apply online? And that if you apply online, you don't need to be sent an application?

There are some really bright people coming to Imperial next year!

Sep 09 2007 05:33

Don't assume they are coming to Imperial, this article seems to appear on search engines when people search for student oyster applications.

I filled an application on 3rd of September. I called to chase it up on 11th Sept and only to confirme it is lost in transit by the post office even though I took it personally to the post office counter to be checked as requested on the form.

I was then told to send in another form with my son's photo, enclosed my last receipt. When I called to chase this up again I was told I have to pay and fill in a separte form. Now this is so inefficient as I am paying ?7.20 daily from Waterloo to Twickenham because they would not sell him a child ticket witout the oyster card

Can you please advice me on what to do because I can not continue with fares or speed up my application.

Sep 13 2007 13:26

Depends which photo card you're talking about - this site is for students at Imperial College (despite all the other bizarre queries) so we know about the 18+ student oyster card.

Are you trying to get the 16+ Oyster or the 11-15 Oyster? I presume 16+, in which case you'll just have to wait and try and claim back the money from TfL on the basis that the post office screwed up.

i will be going to imperial at the end of september. As a fresher, i've registered online at imperial's website. Am I eligible to apply for student oyster card online?btw, i'm an international student

Sep 16 2007 10:02

If you are registered online and have your CID, then online registration for the student oyster card should work. However, it gets delivered to your term-time address, so you need to know which halls you are staying in and your room number.

You might get away without your room number, but its at your own risk :)

23. VISHAL

I am a full-time student studying MBA. My oyster card expires end of september. My course finishes 31-oct-2007.This is really ridiculous system that cards are not issued even till the course ends and I will have to pay full fares. Can you help me How to extend expiry date for a month only?

Sep 17 2007 14:18

You need to be on a course for at least 14 weeks to get the card, so you're probably out of luck.

2007-2008 cards will be valid until 14th October 2008 so that'll be a bit more helpful for people...

25. Jane
Sep 20 2007 04:11

Dear Ashley,

I agree with Vishal. Me and other of my collegues are not happy with the system at all. For my understanding all the Masters courses in UK starts in September and finishes in the mid of October with the final announcement. In addition we have our graduation ceremony in December which would be the official day that we recieve our certificates. In relation to that until December we are all considered as full time students which means we can not work on a full time base. Therefore I do not understand on what bases we have to pay the full amount for our travel while still we are considered as students. Basically, I do not think Vishal was unlucky one but Vishal was one of the many other millions of Masters students.

26. Pundit
Sep 20 2007 08:56

Simple. As full time students we're second class citizens.

Taken me a few years to come to that conclusion, but now I'm pretty happy with it.

Now, if we were on income support...

Sep 20 2007 13:16

Jane, I'm not sure which course you are coming from, Just because your graduation ceremony hasn't been held does not mean you are still a student and can't work. You cease being considered a student as soon as your course ends. Otherwise all Imperial students on any undergrad course would still be 'students' until late October....

my university does not have the student oyster card forms is there another way that i can access a form. I dont want to apply online

Sep 24 2007 11:20

Phone them and see if they can send you a form: 0845 330 9876

Why don't you want to apply online?

Has anyone else noticed that the online application site is refusing to work?

Ive tried three days on the trot and am now ending up having to pay in full fo rmy first week's travel- darn you tfl! darn you to heck!

Sep 25 2007 00:33

It's been going up and down for the past week. Try it at 7am in the morning when there aren't as many people trying to use it.

This page has been viewed 1,000 times today by people looking for information on the Student Oyster Card and its got nothing to do with TfL whatsoever. The number of people trying to use the online application system must be pretty high at the moment...

32. Michel
Sep 25 2007 15:18

So, long queues at the student administration have changed to long queues for the online registration office. How come everything that gets automated in Brittain turns out worse than the original system?

Sep 25 2007 19:51

I cant seem to get onto the online form, doesn't work, I am a full time student living at home, n when I went to uni today, i was upset that I had to pay 9.20 for a there n return ticket to Surbiton, thats just to much for us students

34. Fifi
Sep 25 2007 21:07

what's going on with the online application form?? Ive used a number of computers, surely it must be a web error as it's stating: 'https://photocard2.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/gotoApply.do is unavailable' is this happening to anyone else. If not what should i do?

36. Andy
Sep 25 2007 22:08

This is absolutely ridiculous! I have been trying the online application for days..

i had to pay full fee for the last month because nothing seems to work here.

The last 2 semeser I had to wait for the applicaton form, therefore I had to pay full fee for a month. Now is the same story but with the "new and great" applicaton online system!!!

I am a February starter so on top of all these I have to apply twice a year and pay the ?5 twice. If the application does not work smoothly (and it never does) than in between I even pay the whole fare!

37. Angela
Sep 25 2007 22:10

I think it's pretty unfair the 18+ student card doesn't stretch to day-travelcards and pay-as-you-go journeys. I have complained the TfL and Ken Livingstone, and suggested improving the scheme for students to Boris Johnson (who has a good chance of being the next mayor I reckon). If you feel strongly enough about improving the scheme I urge you to all point it out to thee groups, and maybe they'll get the message that the current discount is inflexible and poor value!!

Oh and I'm having problems accessing the site too. Can't they get ANYTHING right?! :-( !!!

Sep 25 2007 23:25

They are thief and they make our life more complicated instead of help us...we are not just students ,but victims, yes victims of all this f**king "oyster card system"!!!!!!

My oyster student card is going to expire in a week time and there is no form available in the college to update oyster and is impossible do it by the tfl web site...that's so ridiculous!!

I'm living in zone 3 of London and now I will be constrict to pay full price for travel with underground!!!!This is because we're expected to pay for the oyster students card every year ...why?That's a joke?

I'm sick to have all the time trouble with that !!!!

SOME ONE PLEASE CAN HELP ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks

Alessandra

oh my god!i thought it was only happening to me.This is disgusting!its costing me ?7.30 a day when with the student oyster it was ?19.10 for the enitre week.I feel like they are having a "link failure" on purpose..why not rake in the extra cash?

has anyone else found that the london underground staff are so unhelpful with it all, when you simply try and approach them?

Iv been paying adult rate for ages now. What's the problem??Is it because it's too busy?or because the site doesnt work?UCL no longer does paper applicaton forms :-(

Firstly its not LU staffs problem, they can only sell you the tickets your entitled to. No student oyster, no discount.

Why don't you all step back and be thank full that you can actually get a discount when the system works? Spare a thought for all those full fare paying commuters have to put up with you lot complaining about not getting enough discount whilst you take up just as much space in a packed train...

Sep 26 2007 21:45

The link just worked for me, ok so it was slow but maybe you just need to improve you patiences?

https://photocard2.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/gotoApply.do?type=student&from=home

Waiting can't be any worse than the old registry queues of years gone by followed by postal wait etc...

As to why you have to apply every year its to combat the number of drop outs who change course all the time, obvious really, not even the NUS trusts students enough to issue them a card valid for the duration of their initial planned course....

Sep 26 2007 22:28

lol at Devil's Ad ..u work for the LU don't u?

Sep 26 2007 22:52

Rather than paying ?10 a day, why don't you all get a normal Oyster while you're waiting? If it costs ?19.10 for a week with the discount, it would only be about ?30 without. This would be less than your current costs per day...

Sep 27 2007 09:32

Devil's Ad is probably an engineer. We tend to see things a little differently. They've got a point don't you reckon?

I have filled in up to step 5 off the application process which I did place my digital picture on to the application but I have problem to go to the last step which is the payment process it is not opening the page for me to do the payment.

As you know that this takes time and it is very hard to complete all the application process

I have applied for the normal oyster card which is not problem a tall to gate that online. this card is the one helping me temporarily to travel to the University with it but there is no discount on this one which is expensive for me.

Wow, there are some truly breathtakingly stupid people out there.

Guys - don't put your personal details on this discussion board. This is not the TfL Oyster Card help website. This is an online student newspaper for students of Imperial College. The editor has done his best to be informative, but he's nothing to do with TfL so you're asking the wrong people for advice here.

Have some sense and call or email TfL rather than posting your contact details and the fact that you want to pay someone money on here for all and sundry to see. Not everyone who uses the internet is as nice as our editor Ashley.

Sep 29 2007 10:03

"lol at Devil's Ad ..u work for the LU don't u?"

No I don't, I just believe that you should give grief to people who are only doing there job properly. When they are wrong then you are entitled to be angry.

"Devil's Ad is probably an engineer."

Correct, the logical thinking and joined up arguement gave it away didn't it?

Sep 29 2007 15:27

TFL SUCKS! What's this online bulls**t? Had to go through hell just to get that photo to be of "1.29 aspect ratio" bulls**t and all the other time wasting conditions for the photo.

1. Why the hell is TFL being so akward this year?

2. What's the point of all this online bulls**t?

TFL is USELESS!!!

We students deserve a little better from you TFL!

Sort yourselves out!

Sep 30 2007 15:07

Is there anyone i can contact to actually get this stupid card? Cos the page with the form will not load at all, and Uni is refusing to hand out paper ones. This is madness!!

Its our right to get one of these cards, and we can't get hold of them!

55. muriel

how can you spend hundreds of thousands advertising in tube stations, but cant even spend enough money on a webmaster that can actually make the online application form work.

even a first year undergraduate it student would be able to make this website work properly. without taking 100k salaries home.

your supposed to be a serious organization......:(

this is great lunch time bbc news by the way, all major news channels are going to love this story, so any if any journalism stundents see this blog please forward this blog and others to the right channels.

Please note that the link on the TfL website has now changed to the following: https://photocard.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/showLogon.do

The site still seems to be intolerably slow or dead though.

I would like to apply for student oyster photocard online, but there's no name of my college in the lists. What should I do?

Oct 01 2007 15:18

You can't apply online if your college does not appear in the list. Use a paper form.

Oct 01 2007 21:54

hi, can anyone tell me how to make my photo 1.29 aspect ratio? i really don't have a clue.

i've tried on paintshop pro and tfl won't accept it. i'd apply by post but my uni aren't giving out paper applications for some annoying reason.

thanks.

Well i guess everuthing is redicioulus in London, we have to pay for everything and even if you want to apply online for oyster you are not able to because it doesnt work. London is the worst country ever to support the students and sorting things out.

64. Rich
Oct 02 2007 18:58

this is rediculous, why can't we get these from our local tube station? my college have run out and its a waste of money waiting fr a new 1! i agree with Lexy. they should be updated not expire.

Oct 02 2007 19:22

It is RIDICULOUS. Please, if you want a student discount at least make an attempt at being smart enough to go to university.

Oct 02 2007 20:27

how do i chase up my application form when its running late

Oct 02 2007 23:31

Step one for approx 50% of those posting is to read the previous replies and the article and realise what Live! is and the real purpose of these discussion areas.

Step two is for you to learn to write, and probably speak, at least something that resembles english so that when you complain to the correct people (it might be worthwhile trying TfL here) they may listen to you.

68. Aileen
Oct 03 2007 00:56

The online application service is currently overworked and resting, according to TFL's website announcement. I have to say to TFL:

You knew the new term starts in Sept/Oct, as it does every year. You knew how many students were projected to start their new terms in London. You knew how many might apply for an Oyster student card. You had an asymmetrical amount of information in your favour. You knew all this.

SO WHY IN THE HECK DID YOU NOT PREPARE YOUR SERVERS FOR THE "EXCEPTIONALLY HIGH LEVEL OF DEMAND"?

Oct 03 2007 12:51

What happened to the PhD write up "students" being awarded a student discount on the Oystercard?

I really hope that this has been sorted now. Back in 2005 when I was writing up, I was up the sh*ts creek, I had write up status but my travel suddenly became a lot more expensive, which really hurt at a time when my funding had run out as well. The issue made it all the way to TfL and they declined the idea of giving discounts to write up students.

I really hope this is fixed now.....

Oct 03 2007 13:38

The online system seems to have been a good idea but ideas can only work when there are competent people implementing it. For the last two weeks i have been trying to make an online application with no successs. It has taken longer then ever, TFL should of suggested sending the paper application by second class post instead. Welcome to the DIGITAL FAILURE.

Don't use the link in the article. Use this link: https://photocard.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/showLogon.do

TfL changed it. The one above now works and can cope with the load it is receiving.

Oct 04 2007 19:25

Oh dear, it's got a seriously screwed up SSL certificate. (Expired, wrong site name, etc.) I would personally be very hesitant to put anything sensitive (like debit card numbers) into any forms..

It's impossible to get the "online application form" loading.

we feel we should be able to use our oyster card on single fairs, it's unfair that it is only restricted to period tickets because not all of us need to travel everyday of the week. can you not do something where we can atleast get some discount on single tickets. single fairs cost a hell of lot as it is especially at peak times. we're only students!!!

77. Pundit
Oct 06 2007 13:30

Got to say that I disagree with you.

If you don't need to travel everyday of the week it means that you can afford to live near enough to college, and as such don't need to use TFL (afterall this monthly discount is effectively a subsidy on housing costs).

If you want to use TFL for leisure, then we, like everyone else, should expect to pay for it.

So the Oyster online photocard application thing specifies 300 dpi but nowhere can I see a print size, so the 300 dpi is meaningless. Anyone know if I've just missed it or if they really are this stupid?

For the love of god and all that is holy, THIS IS NOT THE FREAKING TFL WEBSITE!

I think we can close, once and for all, the question as to whether higher education is being dumbed down. If this bunch of monkeys represent Britain's future, I weep for her. Plus, I plan to emigrate.

My student oyster just stopped working one day last year and there was no surface damage and nobody at the station could tell me why. I had 5 days of a travelcard on it which i needed to cross town every day for work.. I asked at the cash desk for them to check my records to see that I had payed for at least that days travel in the hope that they would just give me a temporary card to use until a new one arrived. However, they said that no such records were kept and there was no way of proving that my broken Oyster was still holding 5 days of travel. So, I was made to buy another travel card at full price. Or at least asked to.. I didn't have that much cash on me (that's students for you) so I had to go and find the money from somewhere and ended up in trouble at work for being late, and suffering a seriously decreased food budget for the rest of the week.

So. Why aren't these records kept if you keep records on my movements?

The answers obvious of course.. you can do me for fare evasion with a record of my movements to refer to.. by if you keep a record or what i've paid for you might have to reimburse me which is pointless when you can just charge me twice.

and whilst im on a roll about your money grabbing ways.. how many millions have you made in the past two weeks by sending out student oysters (applied for 3 to 4 weeks a go) late??

Seriously, are you stupid or just illiterate? Or maybe you don't pay any attention to the world around you?

Oyster Cards are a waste of time on a level. What they make you pay every year and what for? A bit of plastic with your picture on it...4get them and they got the cheek of saying Touch in and Out...

Oct 26 2007 11:22

Erm ... you pay every year for 1/3 off the cost of weekly travel cards?

Oct 26 2007 13:41

I hate keeping this discussion alive but I can't resist all these stupid flames..

"Oyster Cards are a waste of time on a level. What they make you pay every year and what for? "

Oyster cards don't make you pay every year. You do however have to pay for an annual student travel discount card which comes as an oyster card varient if you qualify for one.

"A bit of plastic with your picture on it...."

Whilst a student railcard which you also have to pay for annually is just a cheap bit of card with your photo on it...

"4get them and they got the cheek of saying Touch in and Out.."

Then how do you intend to travel on public transport?

If you don't touch in you may be liable for a penalty fare, if you don't touch out you'll likely be charged a ridiculous amount (and quite rightly so).

It's an absolute disgrace how we are expected to keep paying for these oyster cards....it's all Livingstone's fault...wot a complet c**t

me again...is there a link that I can buy an oyster photocard for a 16 yr old?!?!? or a student card or w/e the hell it is I am ment to have?

or an online form I can complete or something...getting pretty desperate here.

Dec 29 2007 23:36

The information is here: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/faresandtickets/1018.aspx

It looks like you can only apply online if you live outside London. If you live inside you have to pick up a form from your school (if they have them) or at your local post office.

THIS IS NOT THE TFL WEBSITE. KINDLY TAKE YOUR QUERIES TO TFL.

There should be some sort of IQ test before people are allowed to use computers.
