Live! has recently been spammed with emails from the NUS Senior Press Officer. The same email was sent six times to the Live! editor, despite a request for them to stop.
The contents of the email have been written by current NUS President Gemma Tumelty, and is a copy of an email sent to affiliated institutions for publication by their student media.
Some of the contents of the email are "Four pounds from every sale of the new NUS extra card at your uni will go straight back into your union" and "what with ... buying your Extra card or signing up for your free NUS democracy card..."
Of course, neither of these are relevant to Imperial students as they are unable to get an NUS card, as we are not currently affililated to the NUS.
After receiving the email the third time, Live! editor Ashley Brown emailed the Senior Press Officer asking them to forward a piece on the advantages of joining the NUS instead, however this offer was met by another three copies of the email landing in his inbox. Live! would not like to draw any conclusions on NUS' competence on this particular spamming issue, but feels they should at least know which institutions are currently affiliated.
The NUS campaign at Freshers Fair collected 675 signatures which is enough to call for a referendum on affiliation this year. The "fluffy" side of the sabbatical team appears to be strongly in favour of joining the NUS, with ICU President John Collins and DPEW Ben Harris having attended their events and called on them many times this year. It may not be much of a surprise that their press officer thinks Imperial is already affiliated, given the high level of contact currently taking place.
