As the first big faculty event of the year, the ball is an important event in the Guilds' social calendar, made even more special this year by being the first joint dinner with the RCSU in living memory.
The distinctive Imperial College Bordeaux flowed freely, allowing the after dinner speeches to raise their share of laughs. Although the turnout was smaller than had been hoped, the party was animated and the casino lively and entertaining. Mascots Bo' and Jez stood proud by the Queens' Lawn, and Spanner was held high for the Boomalaka, chanted heartily by the somewhat bewildered freshers.
DramSoc excelled themselves, lighting the Great Hall, MDH and Ante Room well enough to hide their bleak nature and turn them into, respectively, a great gig venue; a pleasant dining hall; and a smoky-feeling gambling den. The centrepiece of the Great Hall lighting was the excellent Guilds Crest gobo, which danced and whirled spectacularly across the stage and crowd.
John Collins, the ICU President, proudly sported a Guilds bow-tie and commented in a text message to a CGCU ex-president something along the lines of "I can hardly remember the last time I enjoyed myself as much". Great praise indeed.
