Following the failure to stop "top-up" fees, which were introduced this year, the NUS is organising a campaign to keep the £3,000 cap imposed on universities. The cap is to be reviewed in 2009, with Russell Group universities already expressing support for the idea. On Sunday 29th October ICU will join the NUS anti-fees march, part of the NUS "Admission:Impossible" campaign. ICU also joined the previous anti-fees demo three years ago.
Top universities in the country are calling for the fee cap to be lifted so they can charge the full economic cost of teaching, along with some extra money for bursary schemes. An increase in fees could result in a drop in applications to university courses and an increased disadvantage to those unable to afford the fees. Imperial's fees in particular are likely to be high across the board, as the majority of courses are lab-based and require expensive facilities. Students paying their own full fees at Imperial could leave with debts in excess of £80,000, using overseas fees as an indication. Non lab-based courses such as English are expected to be cheaper options, posing the risk of decreased student numbers in science and engineering subjects.
Those wishing to join the march can make their own way to ULU on Malet Street for 11:30, or meet in Beit Quad from 10:00.
