Furniture for Da Vinci's (Finally!) Arrives

The new oak furniture for Da Vinci's was installed on Thursday, an entire term after the refreshed bar opened for business.
Da Vinci's, complete with new furniture

After many delays and a somewhat half-baked attempt at installing the new furniture into Da Vinci's, the majority of it is now in the bar and awaiting the return of students at the start of term. The solid oak tables and stools can be taken outside during the summer and appear to be high quality and hard wearing.

Accompanying the new furniture are several new advertising banners, which brighten the place up to some agree but also clash with the paintwork. A small amount of the furniture is yet to arrive, but the bar has now gained some character.

Deputy President (Finance & Services) Jon Matthews said he was "very pleased" that the furniture had finally arrived. It was not, it turns out, somewhere between the Gobi Desert and Shanghai as John Collins had previously suggested.

In other redevelopment news, the central core area is expected to re-open at the start of February, with the new lift being installed during March. Phase 2 plans have mostly been finalised, with a mezzanine level in the gym likely to be the next work to take place. More details will emerge later this term.

Good to see the change.

But I'm slightly concerned with the end of the article which refers to a mezzanine level in the gym being installed.

Was this in the initial plans, whats the lowdown, and when is this going to take place?

Most of the martial arts clubs were told nothing would happen this year, as the Union were waiting for some non-existent money before starting on the gym!

Installing a mezzanine in the gym was always in the masterplan (as approved by Council).

The scope of the next phase is: the mezzanine level will be the brand spanking new SAC with the level below becoming a games room, which combines snooker, pool etc. though this floor may stay as an empty flexible space to aid with decant for further phases. There will be a new gym created on the 3rd floor (where the meeting rooms currently are) and the meeting rooms will move to the east basement.

The exact scheduling is still to be determined, but I doubt anything will happen before the end of the academic year.
