A mistake by CGCU Vice President (Finance & Societies) Boon Koh has left CGCU and its clubs & societies with no money for next year, after he failed to submit a final budget to the Clubs & Societies Board (CSB).
At present the Union's clubs & societies budget is assigned to each CSC or Faculty Union, to be split amongst their clubs as they see fit. Each CSC/FU submitted a bid for money, with each bid reduced to meet the overall total. When budgets are fixed the CSCs and FUs are required to submit final budgets for themselves and their clubs, which Guilds failed to do.
VPFS Boon Koh had already taken a budget cut of £2,000 this year, one of the largest percentage cuts, including the removal of any budget for the freshers' handbook Spanner. The photocopier subsidy for the Guilds office, which is also used by clubs outside of Guilds, was removed in the same round of cuts.
Last week's CSB met to set the final budgets for next year, with every CSC and FU required to submit their final budgets in advance. Despite the deadline being extended Guilds failed to submit a budget, leading CSB to strip it of the money award in the previous stages of budgetting.
Guilds clubs and next year's CGCU exec will now have to beg for their money, appealing the decision to CSB. Departmental societies are likely to suffer least from any final cuts, with most of their income coming from departments or external sponsors.
This mistake comes at the end of a bad year for Guilds, with the VPFS and Vice President (Activities) Borja Sordo both failing to pull their weight, with Honorary Secretary Nick Simpson left to organise events and pick up the pieces. Other notable absentees include the Welfare Officer Emma Persky, whose attendance at Council has been poor making achieving quorum ever more difficult.
