English Smoking Ban Takes Effect

Jul 01 2007 00:07

The smoking ban in England starts today, with College introducing additional restrictions on where smoking is allowed.
It is now against the law...

"No smoking" signs have been appearing all over Imperial recently, to comply with the new smoking ban in England which takes effect today. Smoking in all public buildings and substantially enclosed spaces is now against the law, including the Union Dining Hall which was exempted from a self-imposed smoking ban in the Union last year. Some of the new signs have been hurriedly affixed with masking tape, despite a set of brand new signs being placed around the campus around a month ago.

A notice circulated by College HR earlier in the month lists the places were smoking is not permitted:

  • inside any building or substantially enclosed spaces, owned or used by College for the conduct of College business
  • within the immediate vicinity of entrances to buildings
  • inside any vehicle owned or operated by College
  • anywhere on medical campuses
  • major pedestrian routes, where designated.

The "major pedestrian routes" include all of Dalby Court, the Sherfield Walkway and the pedestrian route by the central library.

Smoking is also banned in all halls of residence, except in single rooms only in the following non-refurbished halls:

  • Fisher Hall
  • Pembridge Hall
  • Wilson House

From July 2008 smoking will not be permitted in any halls of residence.

given smoking has been banned on the sherfield walkway for ages, unless somebody actually bothers to police this the smokers will still smoke on the walkway -- particularly near Huxley where they frequently congregate right in front of the no smoking signs.

nice idea but unless anyone's actually going to enforce it, nothing's going to happen.

The new ban made it illegal to permit smoking. If you see someone smoking in an 'enclosed public space' you can inform a member of staff. If that member of staff does nothing then that staff member can be personaly prosecuted

I've decided now that it's illegal to smoke in public, I'll take up heroin instead

£2500 fine for knowingly permitting smokers. Also, actors are allowed to smoke!
