In an astonishing outbreak of sanity, College has agreed to reverse its changes to the ICU constitution and Code of Practice, promising to consult on future changes it wishes to make. At the same meeting, held this morning, the historic names of the Faculty Unions were officially restored: the "Imperial College Faculty of Engineering Students Association" is no more. This has occured almost a year to the day since College once again voted to throw out "City & Guilds College Union".
ICU President John Collins was required to make a number of concessions with regards to the Code of Practice, with College insisting that it should be able to change parts of it without the Union's approval. Less than half of the Code of Practice is dictacted by the Education Act 1994, including the enforcement of democratic elections and good financial management. It is these legally required parts which College wishes to have full control of, but will consult with the ICU on any changes it feels must be made. The remainder of the Code of Practice, including the defamation policy, staff-student protocol and other annexes will continue to require agreement between both parties.
The Trustee Board, led by Ram Gidoomal, will now be formally set-up after the new constitution was passed. Hacks will now breathe a sigh of relief at never having to see John Collins' governance review slides again.
The long-running battle to restore the historic names of the faculty unions was finally won this afternoon, with the approved constitution referring to City & Guilds College Union, Royal College of Science Union and Imperial College School of Medicine Students' Union.
