Changes have been made to the safety measures in place for the library refurbishment project after a member of staff was hit by a tool which fell out of a bag at the top of the library.
The member of library staff was approaching the rear entrance to the library when a hydraulic cable cutter struck him. The tool was in a bag which had just been raised to the top of the library on a pulley, by sub-contractors working on the library project for Parkeray. As the bag of tools was opened the case containing the cable cutter fell out, striking the scaffolding on the way down. After this impact released the cutter from its case, it appears to have struck a plywood hoarding and deflected into the road where it struck the member of staff, who was subsequently taken to hospital in an ambulance.
The scaffolding on top of the library will now have additional sheeting added to prevent items falling, with the pulley system now taken out of use.
