Last Saturday, October 27th, the Queen's Lawn Marquee played host to the brand new CGCU Autumn Ball, a black tie affair open to the whole faculty and even the whole college, for those non-engineers willing to pay a small premium for the pleasure.
Sponsored by Worley Parsons, the ball was the Guilds Centenary Event with over a hundred attendees, a similar turn out to last year but still a below average turn out historically.
Guests were wined and dined with a drinks reception, accompanied with home grown musical talent in the form of a Jazz quartet. The dinner, centred around the catering special, chicken, was tasty although finishing creme brulee was more like a egg custard. Luckily this intrepid reporter is rather partial to a bit of egg custard so thumbs up. After dinner guests were serenaded by the jazz band while competing at the casino for the grand prize, a pair of BA plane tickets to any destination in Europe.
While the marquee venue seemed to engulf the students those attending appeared to have a good time, with many staying until the early hours of Sunday morning. The after dinner speaker, the esteemed Professor Mike Kelly of Cambridge University gave a rousing speach on the responsibilties of our generation to bring level headed engineering thinking to the table, to deal with the woes that lie ahead.
