Professor David Lloyd Smith has been appointed the Dean of Students, a new position covering student support activities across the college. The position is created partially by the abolition of the post of Pro-Rector for Educational Quality, which was not replaced after Professor Rees Rawlings retired earlier in the year.
Professor Lloyd Smith has been on the academic staff at Imperial for 36 years, 13 years as director of undergraduate studies in civil engineering, followed by 7 years as a college tutor. He is now responsible for all aspects of students welfare throughout the college. Talking to College in an article on their website, he said that the most challenging part of his job would be ensuring that the support network can cope with an increased number of students, especially with regards to disabled students and those under 18 years of age. Professor Lloyd Smith expressed his confidence in the system, and says that the role will play to his strengths, and that he looks forward to interacting with people from all over college, from students to senior staff.
Live! would like to congratulate Professor Lloyd Smith, and wish him the best of luck with his new job.
