Students checking if their degree in Mechanical Engineering will be accredited by their "professional" body, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, had reason to be concerned this week as the department dropped off the November accredited degrees list.
The 2006 intake was the last to be accredited by the IMechE, with the regular process of re-accreditation starting in October last year. Despite the institution insisting it only takes 5 months to do, Mechanical Engineering have only recently received a draft report are still waiting for final approval. Courses in Aeronautics and Bioengineering remain on the list, as their accreditation process is out-of-step with Mechanical Engineering.
Bizarrely, the department's courses are also missing from the list of those currently seeking re-accreditation, looking like the IMechE has forgotten about them altogether. The department is currently sending ever more frantic emails in an attempt to get the situation resolved - the current 2007 intake, who are technically not on an accredited degree, should not worry as all signs are that the slothenly institution will do something useful ... eventually.
