Today's Felix is reporting that long-suffering students will have even more problems to face during the summer term if they are using the library to revise. As if sweltering temperatures were not enough, building work is set to continue through until July, with the lower level of the library not kitted out until well into August.
A basic cock-up in the £10m refurbishment project has seen the plant rooms for the ground-floor air conditioning built to different dimensions to those on the plans. The air conditioning units are custom-built for their housings, so will now have to be redesigned.
Noise from the building work is expected to affect just the lower floors, however students retreating to the top level will still face high temperatures as the heating problems on the top floors have not been resolved. The problem not be as bad as last year, but a complete solution has still not be found after local residents blocked plans for solar-shading. An independent consultancy is expected to report back in March, which will be too late for any respite from the heat this year.
Felix reports that Trudy Breuss, the Library Redevelopment's Project Leader said: "It is disappointing for everyone that it is taking a little longer, but building work doesn't always go to plan". Live! thinks she may have meant "building work in this place never goes to plan", as this reporter can only remember one project finishing on time ... that project being the Shambles halls of residence. The original project plan called for completion in January this year.
