The 2008 elections season has kicked off, with nominations now open for Sabbatical Officers, NUS Delegates and Student Trustees. Rumours abound that last year’s “(not) Southwell Slate” could re-appear this year, with intense competition also predicted in the race for Felix Editor. Other nominations are expected to be highly unsurprising, with the usual mix of CSC chairs, Faculty Union Presidents and miscellaneous hacks looking for more power.
The race to be NUS delegate looks set to be the more interesting one, with the so-called “lefty loonies” from Student Respect/Student Socialist Worker Society expected to mount several candidates in an attempt to block NUS reforms. NUS delegates will be mandated to support the reforms so any campaigning on the issue would be pointless, but whether that happens in the final vote remains to be seen.
Do you have what it takes to run an organisation with a turnover of £5m? Can you cope with revolution, insurrection and petty bickering? Can you survive a run-in with the ACC chair after you slash his budget? If so, visit www.imperialcollegeunion.org/vote/ to stand. Nominations close on 10th February 2008.
