ICU Colours Awards 2008

Jun 10 2008 11:19
The Dark Knight
Last night's Council approved the Union's colours awards for 2008, with an extremely unusual three distinguished fellowships being awarded.
Oooh, ties

Out of ninety people nominated for colours, sixty-seven were awarded colours by the committee, with honorary life memberships and President's awards being announced at last night's ICU Council. Felix Editor Thomas Roberts caused a bit of a fuss at the meeting, expressing his confusion that one person had only received Half Colours.

Outstanding Service Award (6)

Shiv Chopra

Shiv has tirelessly worked for the benefit of the students over the six years he has been at Imperial. He has immersed himself fully in all aspects of Union life, being a member of ICU and Medic clubs. He has been available to lend a hand in many events such as East meets West, Mega Maalai and for the international night held by the Arab society despite not being a member, as well as participating in clubs such as Lacrosse and Boat and societies including Light Opera and Music.

Shiv was instrumental in transforming ICSMSU as well as taking a keen interest in affairs of ICU as demonstrated by his standing for and subsequent election to ICU Council at the start of his 2nd year. Roles he has held in ICSMSU are Social Secretary, Vice President for 2 years and as President last year.

Jarvist Frost

Jarvist is a bit of an ever present, always around doing something. As Chair of the Caving Club between 2004 and 2008 he’s been to every RCC meeting for the last 3 years or something equally ridiculous. He’s been an active member of the Environmental Society, a driver for the Community Action Group on their weekly soup runs as well as being an active member of the Bike Users Group. His commitment, lengthy dedication and involvement should definitely be recognised.

Alex Guite

Alex has given countless years of service to the Union. For the RCSU Science Challenge 2008, Alex secured £18k in sponsorship, helped to attract our judging panel, assembled countless press releases and marked 200 essays.

Among his other work this year he has been an outstanding editor of Broadsheet, making it once again a must read for all RCSU members. Many editors come in with big ideas and plans, but few have delivered them.

In previous years, his record of service is unparalleled, from the President of the Physical Sciences Union, to serving on council for many years, from his famous Queen's Tower tours, to his campaigning for student rights. Alex tirelessly works to improve the lives of fellow students.

Jen Morgan

Jennifer Morgan has played an important role in furthering the RCSU since its resurrection two years ago. As RCSU Welfare officer for 06/07 she gave her all to help both the RCSU & the Union at every opportunity; sitting on Halls Committees choosing subwardens, sitting on disciplinary hearings and participating in the Union governance review on top of going to Council, RWB, teaching committees and every RCSU event. At the end of that year she was voted to be an RWB elected member of exec, taking on responsibilities she would later need as President of the RCSU. After winning that election, Jen went about trying to ensure the RCSU would have a successful year and instead of getting a job she spent her summer working hard, communicating with potential sponsors and the rest of the officers. The time put in over summer for the RCSU has paid dividends from the beginning with the RCSU Freshers Ball achieving a record turnout! Jen's welfare heart also came through and, as president, she instigated carrying out an NSS-type survey for all the departments; people said that the exercise would be a waste of time using SOLE as evidence of poor participation, however some departments returned 100% of surveys. The spring term has been an intense term for Jen, maintaining the effort for the RCSU while worrying about the health of a family member as well as keeping up with intense and tiring treatments for her own condition, whilst keeping up with her final year biology workload, but she pulled through and even attended NUS conference when she should really have been revising – well that sums Jen up really; she is immensely selfless and puts the Union at the foremost of every activity.

Luke Taylor

Luke’s involvement in sports clubs over the time he has been at Imperial has been huge. Involvement in the rugby club as well as developing a thriving C&G rugby team led onto him becoming ACC Chairman. He has stood in this position for the past two years and has tirelessly worked in a time of change. The introduction of Sport Imperial and the Sports Partnership needed a strong sports clubs leader in the form of Luke who stood up for the clubs needs. Luke has spent hours and hours sorting club problems and attending meetings that nearly always have no direct benefit to him. His work over that last two years as ACC chair has brought structure and solidity to the sports clubs set up within the Union and College. Without his time, effort and enthusiasm the Union would be in a very poor state indeed.

Lily Topham

Lily is passionate about the SCC and has been a treasury of advice for SCC club officers. She has helped club officers by simplifying the complex financial issues that accompany the Union’s bureaucracy and has left no stone unturned in making sure that every SCC club is aware of what is going on with their budgets and appeals.

Lily has also demonstrated excellent people management skills. She can be firm when she needs to be, but without sounding patronising unlike some of her predecessors.

She has always been available and approachable to discuss any club issues or problems, and has often suggested viable solutions.

Lily belongs to the small number of people who have helped to improve the lives of club officers by working with them as opposed to working above them. She has definitely contributed positively to the function of the SCC this year and deserves commendation for this.

Fellowships

Eugene Chang

Eugene had to step up to the mark for 2007-08 when he took on the role of RCC Chair from a previous Chair who lived and breathed the Union which was a huge responsibility to take on; Eugene undertook this with great vigour and passion and certainly should be proud to date.

Eugene has been wonderfully over-enthusiastic, holding a huge number of committee positions. Also, has been involved with a stupid number of societies in the last four years he has been at Imperial. Another CSC Chair who stands up for his clubs at the highest level and always has the best interests of the Union at heart, Eugene is well deserving of Fellowship.

Andy Mason

Andy has been instrumental to Arts scene at Imperial College Union ensuring that students have had the opportunity to engage and participate at any level. Andy’s devotion to Clubs and Societies is assiduous; being an ever present body in the Student Activities Centre, making himself available and dealing with everyone in a patient and tolerant manner. And has lived and breathed Union for the last few years and will be missed.

Andy always goes above and beyond for the Union which is why this is a well deserved Fellowship.

Emiko Yoshikawa

Emiko Yoshikawa’s excellent teaching, friendly character and open attitude towards beginners are the centrepiece and binding element of our club. She has been teaching

the Imperial College Kendo Club, for free, since its foundation in 1998. Emiko, who holds the 5th dan grade in kendo and regularly competes in international tournaments, teaches with great dedication and to the highest standards. She devotes much of her time and energy to the club, running at least two sessions a week throughout the year plus extra sessions before competitions and gradings. Several times a year, she brings outstanding international kendo players to club practice. 2008 marks the club’s 10th anniversary and is a great opportunity to acknowledge Emiko’s efforts and her ten years of service to our club and the Union.

Distinguished Fellowship

Ashley Brown

As Live! Editor Ashley has completely rewritten the website and added numerous new features. This has won Ashley the Guardian Student Media Award and seen the readership increase from a few Guilds Hacks to over 50,000 unique visitors in the past year. Ashley has also taken an active involvement in Stoic and IC Radio helping them to develop their content and increase their following amongst the student body.

As Chairman of RCSMC Ashley has taken careful care of Jezebel, winning numerous trophies at events throughout the last few years including ‘Spectators Choice’ at the Uxbridge Autoshow and for the first time since 1962 beating Dennis’s own N-type to take second place in the HCVS London-Brighton run. Ashley has also been responsible for seeing the club triple its active membership base through events, activities and excellent publicity.

As the City and Guilds College Union Postgraduate Member of Council with excellent attendance and intelligent contributions. Fount of all knowledge in the RCC. Stalwart of Guilds; which would not have survived this year if Ashley had not been doing the job of President alongside his own Executive Position of CGCA Liaison Officer.

Ashley will be sorely missed by Imperial College Union, Guilds and Imperial College for his computing skills. He has been System Administrator for Imperial College Union, knight-in-shining-armour for Guilds and student rep on various College Committees, such as the ‘My Imperial’ Portal Project and Web Users Group, who sing his praises at every turn.

Daniel McGuinness

During his time at Imperial Daniel has demonstrated that he has met all the criteria to be awarded a Distinguished Fellowship. In addition to serving as ICSMSU President and Council Chair this year he has continued to share his valuable experience and insight and has done a fantastic job as a Student Trustee and also by kindly offering to act as Returning Officer for the Sabbatical Elections which were by far the most professional that I have seen during my time at the College.

Danny has always been one to passionately voice his opinion of what he deems right for the Union and always has the best interest of the Union and his members at heart.

In light of his length of dedicated service to the Union Danny is more than deserving of a Distinguished Fellowship of Imperial College Union.

Eirini Spentza

Eirini has been an exceptional representative from and to the Union for a number of years.

As a Postgraduate Representative for the last two consecutive years Eirini has put in a huge amount of work resulting in two successful presentations to the Strategic Education Committee based on information and research that Eirini had gathered.

As a holder of the Women’s Campaign Portfolio for two years and doing a lot of work with Welfare and Women issues prior to that Eirini has built up a successful and worthwhile network of Female Students, Staff and Alumni through the Women in S.E.T initiative to ensure that her hard work continues to pay off.

During her Undergraduate Eirini was involved in Guilds as Welfare Officer and the work that she put into that position during her time is still relevant and useful now for an incoming Officer to the Welfare position in Guilds. Eirini, through tireless dedication to the Positions and Students she represents, has made a lasting impression on the college and on the Union and her hard work will be paying off for years to come.

why did Ram Gidoomal get a president's award?

Jun 10 2008 14:31

Might this be a good time to do a review of the union year?

Jun 10 2008 14:33

A review will follow when the Union have put theirs into Felix/onto the website.

Jun 11 2008 11:52

I'm I the only person who has finally realised it's time to stop playing in the Union? :-)

Jun 12 2008 11:27

Has anyone else noticed that the tie at the back in the picture is not an ICU colours tie at all, it's an RCSU one.

Jun 12 2008 17:02

Yeah me me me! It's been like that for years now. Dunno why they don't update the photo. RCS colours ties kick a**e though.

Jun 14 2008 22:12

I wonder who they could have been refering to in Lily's award: "She can be firm when she needs to be, but without sounding patronising unlike some of her predecessors"

Lol

Ohoho how very funny of you to drop by and leave that gem of comedy for us to enjoy. Maybe if you hadn't been such a gawky, wierd and alienating presence in the SCC, you would have got an award. Arrgh, I've had enough of you socially inept, try-hard physics wierdos on Live! - you and Kilian. ditch this bulls**t

Jun 15 2008 15:26

Jun 20 2008 18:06

I got plenty of awards thank you lady of the night, but I don't mind your comment, I'm continuously mocked about it anyway. However, I take offence at being called "gawky".

Why did Luke get an award... there are several sporting societies that he has totally ignored this year..!!

12. hmm
Jun 21 2008 12:02

I hear he hasn't called an ACC meeting since the ACC AGM in March despite his standing orders requiring him to call a meeting once a month...

Jun 21 2008 12:34

Who cares what the standing orders say? Luke does whats best for ACC and if further meetings were deemed not to be of much use then credit to him for not wasting eveyones time. We elect people like Luke to lead the ACC according to what they believe is in their best interests. It is good that in this instance he has taken the ACC standing orders as a guide rather than taking a more pedantic, absolutist approach to his role.

It is about time that people realised that students don't care about constitutions and standing orders. Oh well, as long as a few deluded hacks get to kid each other on that by fiddling with the rules then they are actually making a difference for students then comments like the one above will continue to be made.

Constitutions and standing orders are boring and hacky but necessary. how else can you hold somebody to account for not carrying out their job description if it is not clearly defined? You would complain if the DPFS never dealt with club queries because he is too busy running commercial services and thinks clubs are a waste of time. Or if the ACC treasurer didn't process and write claims just because she thought this was not in the interests of the ACC. Similarly Luke is supposed to carry out the basic tasks required of him which are outlined clearly in standing orders.

I might point out that CSC meetings are important for disseminating information and approving contingency claims. Not holding a CSC meeting means that any club who needs to make a claim for emergency money cannot do so... Luke cannot just award contingency claims as he likes! So if ACC Cricket were to have all their kit stolen whilst at an away match, they'd have no way of claiming contingency for it.

There's a reason behind CSC standing orders requiring monthly CSC meetings - to cater for demands of clubs who have activities at different times of year, and not just those who function during the BUSA season. These standing orders are not made up by deluded hacks with too much time; some thought process goes in to each amendment.
