Phase 2 of the Beit Redevlopment has kicked off this week with work starting on the gym and the East Basement. The work was originally scheduled to start in March but was moved back to August due to the tendering process and other prepartaory work. Live! would have liked to get some better photos but everyone in Beit was at a Summer Ball meeting when we visited.
Advice Centre Rebranding
The Advice Centre is being re-launched this year with a new advertising scheme, a new name and a lot of new ideas.
Previously known as the 'Information and Advice Centre' the new branding is hoped to encourage more people to use the service due to it's more simplistic description.
In an attempt to get rid of cursed three letter acronyms such as 'IAC' the service promises to become more open and accessible to students.
The grass is always greener...
...at the start of term. With Freshers' week a breath away College, in their infinate wisdom, have returfed the grass in Beit Quad once again. Don't get me wrong, Live! loves grass where it should be, but the liklihood of this nice new green carpet settling down in time to survive the events planned for Freshers' week is around about zero to none. While the intention is probably to have the campus looking as nice as possible for Freshers' arriving next weekend it would no doubt be a more long lasting and effective plan to replace the grass immediately after the Summer Ball. This way it would have the sunny season to properly root in and the Prommers could enjoy their drinks in a much more pleasant surrounding.
The wheels on the bus
The next in a series of rolling replacements of the union's minibuses has arrived, complete with vinyls depicting more club and society activities. Without roof racks there is less likelihood of these buses getting stuck in multi storey car parks but no guarantee that they won't suffer the same faults as the rest of the minibus fleet. Almost all buses currently have recorded faults with their sliding passenger doors.
Added functionality of the new buses is the ability to set cruise control. This reporter has since been informed that this was not the purpose of the 62mph limiter.
A lick of paint
Da Vinci's has received a nice new paint job in time for the new academic year. Many will argue that this is two years over due after the initial reaction to the 'hospital green' colour scheme the last time it was painted. Now in a much more sophisticated off white and dark grey the place already looks better. Hopefully they will have enough paint left to re-do dBs after a rather pathetic attempt by last years Sabbs has left the room looking only slightly less shabby than it did before.
Musical Offices
Despite gearing up for the new term with a great new image, the Advice Centre has been moved out of it's usual space (next door to the Chaplaincy) and into the RAG Office in time for the start of term. Just as new student's are getting to grips with the Union, the services on offer and trying to make sense of the campus Nigel Cooke, the Student Advisor, has been moved out while refurbishments go ahead on his East Wing Basment Office. Worries that students will not be able to find the cupboard space he is currently housed in should be averted due to hastily scribled marker pen on the new Advice Centre Posters.
Nigel will be moving back into his normal Office in a couple of weeks to allow Governance Coordinator, Rebecca Coxhead to move into the RAG Office instead. This is to allow risers to be installed in the 1st floor office as part of the Beit Redevelopment.
