Students in the Royal School of Mines have been denied their morning coffee today as the Bessemer Cafe has been closed for a function. Originally announced in an email from Catering Operations Manager, Steve Salter, students were given little idea of the nature of the closure with comments of "This wouldn't have happened if we still had Claud's" echoing around the department.
Increased security on the entrance to the building immediately raised suspicions as swathes of Security Guards and men in smart suits descended on the department first thing this morning. Nobody is being allowed into the Department for their lectures without a valid College ID card.
The event is being hosted by the Imperial College Business School (formerly the Tanaka Business School) and is entitled "The Changing of a New Economic Age". Attendance is by invitation only with one of these invitees being Prime Minister, Gordon Brown.
Despite the visit of such a high profile figure to the Department, RSM students remain un-impressed at having to walk all the way to EEE for a coffee that costs more than twice as much. Already disadvantaged by the loss of Claud's cafe questions have been raised about why a Business School function could not have been hosted in their own, exclusive, basement cafe in the Tanaka Building.
