The Guardian Student Media Awards were a good all round night for Imperial, with Felix taking the top award. Beating off strong competition, Felix took the award for best student newspaper, which it last won in 2006 under Rupert Neate. Former Felix editor Tom Roberts was stunned to be named student journalist of the year, and wins six weeks work experience at the Guardian. Angry Geek won runner up in the columnist category, with I,Science magazine taking the runner-up place in the magazine category to top off an excellent night for Felix.
Live! was not as fortunate, losing its title as best student website to the excellent (and much improved) Cherwell from Oxford University. Whilst it was a little disappointing to lose, being on the short-list is an achievement in itself with over 800 entries across the categories. The competition was intense, and many of the other websites have a much larger staff and budget that Live! has. Often, the news websites are strongly linked to the printed student newspaper; very few are independent as Live! is. We will be trying extremely hard to win the award again next year!
The success of Felix and I,Science continues a good run for Imperial's student media, with everyone except ICRADIO having taken home some glassware in the past few years.
