More Computers and More Staff for the Central Library

Dec 18 2008 01:18
James Lewis
In an interview with stoic news Angus Brown, a Team Leader at the Central Library, outlined plans to install new computers next term and to increase the number of staff to improve how the library connects with its users.
Is this a library or an Art Gallery?

Over the course of its first term the redeveloped Central Library has proven to be popular with both students and staff. The number of students using the library facilities has increased dramatically but old problems such as the lack of free computers still remain. The decision to hire a Marketing Manager for the library has been criticised by some as a waste of money. Stoic News interviewed Angus Brown, Team Leader of Public Services, about these issues.

Despite the introduction of ninety new computers over the last year finding a free one during the middle of the day is still incredibly difficult. In the interview Mr Brown outlined plans to expand the number of computers available on both levels one and two during the next term. A new team of Student Support Assistants will be introduced with their aim being to increase the staff presence in study areas. Their role will be to provide advice on using the library and to improve access to computers by making sure they are used properly and fairly.

One of the many roles of the library Marketing Manager will be to encourage the use of the library by researchers and staff, they will also have a major influence on the content of the Library website, one of the most browsed of the college web pages. The large number of library users means that keeping students and staff well informed and letting them know all the services the library has to offer is an important and essential job. The salary for the position will be funded from the pre-existing staff budget so the budget for textbooks and journal subscriptions will not be affected. If you feel there aren't enough copies of a particular textbook you are encouraged to contact the main library email address or the relevant faculty support librarian

Overall the first term for the Central Library has gone well with the only problem, somewhat unsurprisingly, being the heating. Only a small number of library issues could be covered in this interview. If there are any questions you would like to be asked in a subsequent interview please post it in the comments section below.

Are there any plans to make the library catalogue computers opposite the help desk compliant with the law (i.e. adjustable)?

F**king hell, how neeky was that comment?!! How long do you realistically use them to need them to be "adjustable"?

I hate to break it to you, but there are better causes in the world.

Don't be silly. some people need adjustable because of wheel chairs...

There are bigger issues in principle, I agree. The problem is that if college don't make them "adjustable", they are in breach of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992- don't ask me why I know that.

That sounds ridiculous, but clearly I'm not the only one who knows about that and there is a massive "let's sue the college" angle apparent. And then we'd have to sell all the books and the library would only serve really bad food. Hang on a minute...

The library is a library, not a computer lab...

I agree. I tried to revise in the library during my exams to try and get away from Facebook (and Live!) but failed miserably. It's harldy an environment conducive to working in.
