DepSoc Elections 2009: Meet the Candidates

Mar 03 2009 14:52
Kirsty Patterson
Some of CGCU's most hotly contested elections this year are over DepSoc Positions. To find out who is vying for your vote, Live! meets the candidates and finds out what they've been up to before now.
A selection of the candidates we could fit in such a small space...

There are so many positions that we couldn't fit them in one single article. However separate articles would have just been excessive so the Live! Team have come up with a new toy for you to play with. Click on your department to see who wants to be running your Departmental Society next year. Have fun!

Aeronautical Engineering

With almost all the positions contested in the AeroSoc Elections there is plenty of choice! Plus three candidates are battling to be Departmental Representative.

Departmental Representative (3)

Nikhil ANAND

Nikhil Anand

"I am a 1st year aeronautics student who loves to be a part of something bigger than myself. I'm always up for meeting new people and trying new things whenever, wherever. I have experience in co-ordinating large teams and events but I'm still always up for a laugh! Currently I am involved in halls events aswell as various clubs like funkology, ice hockey and jazz and rock. I am enthusiastic about every aspect of my life especially my positions of responsibility and look forward to the coming years in the department."

Gilbert DOUGHERTY

Gilbert Dougherty

"Hey guys!! I?m a 2nd year Aeronautics student and Year Representative. When not having my heart broken by the latest tutorial sheet, I like to eat cereal (but my flatmates have imposed Lent upon me and removed my Crunchy Nut), and relax by firing machine guns, flying around the country and looking good in uniform with the University of London Air Squadron. Being Irish, I drink stout and I drink often. When not doing any of the above, I attempt to attract females using my face. However, because this seldom works, I must often resort to charm and debonair."

Chair (2)

Majid ALI

Majid Ali

"I?m an easygoing, fun and sociable 19-year-old first year Aeronautics student who loves to enjoy life. Being the joker out of the bunch, I?m always up for a laugh.

I look forward to encountering new things in life, especially the food and places London has to offer! I?m passionate about what I do, whether I work, play or fly planes.

I captained my school cricket first team. I thrive in and enjoy the responsibilities leadership brings. I?m just a straightforward, honest guy who wants to do well, and make the most of whatever I do in life."

Jakub ERNT

Jakub Ernt

"Currently a second year Aeronautical Engineering student, I am about to finish my work as the PolSoc vice-president and devote my time to the Aeronautical Society. After playing football for my hall last year I stay involved in sports, becoming a member of IC Wu Shu Kwan. Outside the university I am interested in gliding, sailing and many other less aeronautical activities. I always try to do my best ? I came top of my year last time if you need any specific examples. Moreover, one of my strongest points is the ability cooperate with others and work in a group."

Secretary (2)

Taha DAR

Taha Dar

"Hey, my name is Taha, and I?m a second year undergrad in the Aero department. I?ve been living in London for the past 6 years, but I?m originally from Karachi, Pakistan where I?ve spent most of my life. Trust me, it?s not a bad place! I?m really into motorsports (which is probably what really got me interested in engineering in the first place) and I like running and cycling. My favourite TV show is Prison Break, and I enjoy listening to most types of music but I tend to prefer hard rock / metal (I blame my brother for that)."

My multitude of hobbies include watching planes, reading about planes & flying planes, surprisingly enough in my spare time I?m designing a plane I hope to enter into a birdman competition later this year. Aside from these aviation related activities, I also play quite a lot of sport. I?m an outgoing, fun-loving and friendly guy and always up for an exciting challenge. :)"

"Hi there, I?m Jingzhi, year 2, Biomedical Engineering. My friends easily identify me as one of the busiest persons around. Just this year, scholar?s representative, year representative, IC Singapore Society treasurer and Hwa Chong Institution Alumini exco, I?m on the trot all the time serving my community. Yet I really enjoy working with and for people. Besides these, I?m loving the afternoons spend at Trent Park with IC Ridding and Polo club, and the fiery nights stamping away in passionate Spanish beats at flamenco classes outside college. I was also member of IC Caving Club, Art Society, and Dance Company."

"I'm your friendly Third Year Bio Engineer who you would have seen hanging around the common room or during any of the BioEng Soc events. I was the Chairman of the BioEng Soc last year, which gave me the chance to organise and plan familiar events such as the Christmas Dinner and International Food Night. This year I am also heavily involved in the production of Singapore Society's musical, Ah Yum! Through these experiences, I?ve learnt a great deal on how to handle social and academic issues at individual and club level."

When I?m not out and about roaming the streets of London with my fellow departmental friends, you can find me in the library with those same mental...whoops...I mean departmental friends...hehe...a very exciting life indeed. My greatest sorrow is my love-hate relationship with food which means I love to eat but hate the consequences thereafter...but hey...at least the gym is free right?!"

"I am in EE2 and the current year representative. A participant in the Superstars event of last year and member of ICMC and Real Ale Soc, my interests besides electronics include politics and music. A keen cyclist and runner, I enjoy seeing my local football team Bristol City play and hope one day to silence the Malaysians with a win over Manchester! I am widely travelled throughout Europe and understanding of different cultures (and beers!) to the extent that I am approachable and receptive to your opinions. I want to ensure that EESoc remains the best departmental society at IC!"

"Hey, I'm an EEE2 (ugh) who loves everything involving adrenaline and testosterone! When I'm not out getting my arm dislocated doing muay thai or loving the pain in the gym, you may find me in the lab/lib trying to get my head around the monster that is EEE. And very occasionally, I do find myself getting somewhat hammered. No worries though, this is usually on Fridays, which leaves ample time to recover before Superstars Sports on Sundays. Sport is simple really: Discipline, Determination and Drive."

"I am currently in the second year studying EEE. I am originally from Manchester and I have enjoyed my time at Imperial so far, however quite challenging, as I'm sure you will agree. I enjoy going out for a drink, when I can find a spare moment that is! I also spend a fair amount of time in the gym."

"My name is Song Ruixi. I am a 1st year EEE student. I am interested in being involved in all kinds of activities organised in clubs and societies. Also, as a member of Volunteering Centre, I find it quite meaningful to do volunteering work(e.g. Women In Set) in my spare time and I gained valuable experiences as volunteer of 2008 Paralympic Game in Beijing. I enjoy communicating with different people about courses or extra-curriculum activities. By interacting with peers, I would really be keen on how to improve our efficiency and effectiveness in academic work."

"I am studying Information Systems Engineering, and am currently in my second year. I work part time at the ICT Service Desk and in my free time I dance Salsa and enjoy watching Formula 1. At college I have been Year rep for the last two years. This has given me the opportunity to get to know the various members of faculty in my department. This has helped me to solve the various problems that were faced by the students in my year."

"My name is Carolin and I have spent the last three years in the Materials department. Over these years, I have enjoyed many events organised by MatSoc, which I feel have drawn me closer to the department. I am standing for MatSoc Treasurer to make a contribution to the department. I am very approachable, open to suggestions and also have a keen drive to make improvements. As student representative of my year, I have an understanding of how the department is run and a good idea of what the student body wants improved."

Mechanical Engineering

After starting 2008 with only a Departmental Representative, Mechanical Engineering is not looking so great with a lot of empty shoes to fill.

"I am currently completing my 3rd year in mechanical engineering, and, as a sociable person who enjoys getting to know other Imperial students, I took on the role of year representative and hall senior in my second year. I have been playing rugby for Imperial for the last three years, whilst keeping up a music scholarship and playing with the Imperial symphony orchestra.

Outside university I enjoy training with the University of London Officer Training Corps, with the aim of one day making a career in defence or the armed forces."

"Hi there, I?m Steve. On good days I?m a second year Mechanical Engineer, on good nights I?m probably at a society meeting, or cooking up or sleeping. On bad nights I?m in the library. A lot of people call me a hippy, I can deal with that. I like trains, you?ll have to deal with that. I like keeping busy, i?ve ended up being involved in 7 clubs and also a re-app at Wilson House. Sometimes I have time to make music, this makes me happy."
