Evelyn Gardens Evacuated

Mar 16 2009 21:28
Kirsty Patterson
Students living in Halls of Residence in Evelyn Gardens have been evacuated after an explosion has left the area with no power.
This entrance to Holbein Hall is still closed due to work on electrical cables in the street.

Update: After many hours of work on the problem, engineers granted students in Holbein and Willis Jackson halls access to their halls of residence at around 9.40pm, with all problems fixed (however there was still no access to some entrances due to continuing repairs being carried out by EDF engineers in the street).

Students have been evacuated from Halls in Evelyn Gardens after a minor explosion yesterday evening has disrupted electricity and water supplies to the buildings and caused a halt in internet and telephone services. Students returning this evening have found that the problems have still not been fixed and have been sent away again.

DPEW, Hannah Theodorou, who is staying in one of the halls told Live! "a pathing slab was literally blasted into the air and then we were left with no power. Luckily I had enough battery left on my laptop to finish my Council Report."

The Halls affected include Southwell, Holbein and Willis Jackson.

What was Hannah doing finishing her council report last night when it was due in before the weekend?

Where the hell were they evacuated to and where are they staying now?

There were rumours that Southwell was going to be evacuated, then we were brought outside and told those from the 'Dark Side' would be crashing in rooms of those from the 'Light Side'. About 10mins after this power was restored though so everyone had a fairly normal night...

Last week was the week from hell. It was up for everyone's perusal at 8.30am- unlike the others...

Yet more inappropriate use of the term "engineer". I very much doubt the employees of EDF have graduated from an Engineering degree. They are much more likely to be "technicians".

Please research and clarify.

Mr ISE Student,

I am an employee of said company, and I am an MEng ACGI. It would be entirely reasonable to have an Engineer on site in this situation, along with a cable jointer.

Some Engineers do get their hands dirty - it may come as suprise to ISE students, who spend their life in fornt of a keyboard
