NUS President Offends Londoners

Oct 28 2009 14:37
Tintin
NUS President, Wes Streeting, today caused controversy on micro-blogging site "twitter" when he called London an "utter dirty, congested disgrace".
Wes Streeting's comments sparked anger in the twitter community.

National Union of Students President, Wes Streeting, today caused controversy on popular micro-blogging website "twitter" when he said that he "really, really hates London" whilst on his way to a Higher Education conference.

Streeting, who uses the website regularly, this morning said: "I really, really hate London. This city is such a complete and utter dirty, congested disgrace".

Within minutes users were re-posting Streeting's rash comments and many told him to "leave" if he doesn't like the city.

Conservative Gossip website "Tory Bear", referring to Streeting's Labour membership and connection to politics, said that they hoped "it's not a London seat that Wes Streeting will be looking for when he leaves NUS".

Another user, Ed Gray of London, hit back at the NUS, saying, "No I think you'll find that its the NUS thats a complete disgrace - representing a small minority of vocal left-wing crackpots".

Whilst Imperial College students are not directly represented by the NUS, many of London's 388,000 Higher Education students are and the organisation's image and policies do affect all students nationally.

After attending a meeting with the Council for Industry and Higher Education, the NUS President returned to twitter and expressed his astonishment that "right wing armageddon" had broken-out over his comment.

This guy grew up in London, he's just having a mini-whinge. Cut him some slack.

Oct 28 2009 17:38

Isn't he from Bermondsey (or somewhere round there)?

Oct 28 2009 17:47

Wes swings so far left that he comes right back round into the far right. He is no better than Nick Griffin. No Confidence the f**ker!

just read this week's felix...

honestly, why do people take on positions of responsibility if they bail out so easily at the first hurdle? Shame on Lawrence, shame on live, shame on CGCU. complete f**king joke.

Oct 30 2009 13:28

and shame on the RCSU for delivering a c**p ball, losing money, and not managing to run the science challenge, which was the true highlight of the RCSU's new existence

and now the main live page seems to have an internal server error...seriously weetman, taking down the main live page because you're embarrassed is beyond pathetic. beyond the c**p i'm sputtering here. ridiculous

Oct 30 2009 16:45

Hi there.

  • - LIVE! DOWNTIME --

APOLOGIES for the website problems. I've temporarily fixed them for now, but I suspect that won't last long.

If you read the errors, you'll see that I've not been "taking down the main live page", but that Live! has exceeded its disk quota. Normally, the only option available to us when this happens is to archive/delete old articles. The problem with that is that they're good for reference in the future.

So. Long term solution? I don't know. In the forseeable future, we're moving Live! over to the new ICU server. This means that we can have some more storage space, and free up some space on the old server for other club and society websites. I expect this to happen in the next week.

  • - FACEBOOK --

Leaving facebook was a personal decision. I just got a bit fed up with it. Especially since for the last two weeks it's not been letting me post anything, throwing up database errors every time I clicked something and generally just annoying me. If closing my account on a commercialised piece of c**p that spends most of its time telling me who I should and shouldn't be friend with makes me a "pussy" then so be it.

Having said that, I'll probably be back on the book of face in a couple of weeks... when I have time to weed out some of the "friends" from the past that I don't really want in my feed any more.

  • - GUILDSHEET --

Yes, I resigned from Guildsheet. I originally stood for election 15 minutes before nominations closed because: a) no body else seemed willing to do so and b) because I thought I'd enjoy it.

I'm not intending upon leaving the magazine entirely up the proverbial creek. Had felix published my actual statement, you would have been able to read:

"This latest development doesn't mean that I intend to stop working on the magazine, however I don't feel that I am able to do it justice and believe that Guildsheet would benefit from having another person at the helm - as well as an increased team size."

It's a stressful, demanding task. The second year of my degree so far hasn't given me time to seek adverts from local businesses (something I'd already spent a week or so on over the summer).

At the end of the day, I'm here to do my degree. If I choose to punctuate that with social and extra-curricular activities that I enjoy then that's great. Writing Guildsheet with a minimal team is neither social nor enjoyable. I decided that I had other things to concentrate upon, including college work, being a hall senior and Live!.

  • - ARTICLES --

Due to the down-time on Live!, and the fact that Tintin and Kent are pretty busy right now, we have a bit of a backlog of stories that I'm struggling to have time to write (or publish, because as soon as we fill more server space the site will break!).

The following articles need writing. If you want to help, please let me know. If not, don't moan when they're published a few days out of date:

  • NUS Calls for SLC Chief to Resign
  • Govenment Diploma Ad Broke Rules
  • Guilds Office Security Issues
  • felix's report on CGCU Issues
  • Live! is moved to new server (editorial, when it happens)

Right now, I have labwork to do.

Thanks for reading!

Erm, why don't you buy a new hard drive? Isn't this the future now? We can get 1TB drives for like, ?50

Didn't this place used to be called Imperial College of SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY and medicine ? Surely someone has heard of advances in storage ?

Oct 31 2009 09:56

RESPECT for WEETMAN. well, a little bit at least.

most union hacks (no i'm not accusing lawrence of being one, but just for comparison) wouldn't have stood up for themselves, but rather played hide and seek or simply deleted comments (cough) like mine. so respect for lawrence on that.

standing for the position was just a spur of the moment mistake then, we all make those. however, has anybody noticed the drop-out rate among union-elected-officials? it's immense, and that speaks of a broader problem...for another time.

Oct 31 2009 14:14

@15. erm?

I believe that all club and society websites at Imperial College Union have to be stored on the Union servers. The Union server itself actually became full at the end of last year (as in, not just Live!'s disk quota but the entire server). This issue was resolved somehow, but the server is still pretty full.

As far as I know, ICU now has a new server for club and society websites, and once some are moved over it will hopefully resolve the problem.

@16. Lord Jonathan

Standing for Guildsheet when I knew that I would be standing for Live! Editor was my biggest mistake. I was very excited about being Guildsheet editor. I've just discovered that it's something I'm not particularly good at, or have a huge amount of time for. I just hope that by moving away from the role, I'm allowing someone better to take over.

Oct 31 2009 17:20

@17:

Someone better? Hopefully, though given felix's coverage of events people may not exactly be jumping for the position.

Nov 01 2009 01:12

I have someone in mind. I don't know if he'll accept, though...

let's look at the student news that Live! thinks is relevant to students:

"The following articles need writing. If you want to help, please let me know. If not, don't moan when they're published a few days out of date:

NUS Calls for SLC Chief to Resign

Govenment Diploma Ad Broke Rules

Guilds Office Security Issues

felix's report on CGCU Issues

Live! is moved to new server (editorial, when it happens)"

There's a reason why nobody reads Live! and I think we may be close to identifying it...

Nov 03 2009 09:04

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Nov 03 2009 12:57

CGCU has been a farce for at least 3 years now, and the tradition seems to be continuing this year as well...

Nov 03 2009 13:17

Thats not totally true. Many of the CGCU exec have worked extremally hard to make CGCU work. James fok, Mark Mearing Smith, John James, Matt Taylor et al.

The truth is these guys have worked hard.

Nov 03 2009 13:52

@honestly:

that was sarcasm, right? sorry, old age is getting to me, just had to double check.

Nov 03 2009 13:56

I must admit I laughed out hard when they mentioned James Fok as a hard worker. The guy is a flop and a loser.

What did he do? He did my best friend, Jack S**t

Nov 03 2009 13:59

cheers, i was getting worried for a second there!

it did sound like a list of nominations for "worst guildman of the century". in fact, what do you think of these odds:

2/1 fok

5/1 mearing-smith

6/1 taylor

3/1 sherlicker

who am i missing?

Nov 03 2009 15:32

I should have know better than to be nice about people on live. It does regularly turn into very disrespectful place.

I don't know what Mearing did wrong and as for taylor he was alright and a very nice man.

As for Fok he did try!

Can we just be nice for a change?

28. Taylor
Nov 03 2009 16:49

Which Matthew Taylor? There were two. And they both held the same position. Although admittedly a few years apart.

Nov 03 2009 17:05

@28:

not the current matthew taylor!

fok tried what? to get some CV points for his oh-so-glittering career? give me a break. maybe it wasn't entirely his fault, maybe his committee wasn't that great, but he sure helped fuel the downfall of cgcu.

bring back collins, he may have made mistakes, but he was the best the union has seen this decade by a mile and a furlong.

Nov 03 2009 20:35

my vote would go to KIRSTY for the pile of dogs**t that is CGCU this year, but then i'd be robbing KATYANIYANIYANIYANI and AFONSO of the credit they deserve in destroying the RCSU.

hell, they haven't even changed the committee on the website.

DAVID CHARLES for president. the true OBAMA

Nov 04 2009 02:54

@30:

In fact, the RCSU website is still saying "The final term has come!". I wonder how long that website will remain trapped in the final term of my first year...

Nov 04 2009 08:41

does anyone know if the science challenge is running this year? i haven't seen or heard anything coming from the rcsu...

Nov 04 2009 08:42

for the record...the science challenge website hasn't been updated, either. oh dear

Nov 04 2009 19:00

let's play a game: somebody who's not an RCSU insider make me a market on how many days it will take the RCSU to both update their committee page and the science challenge website. pound a day from bid/ask.

come on you punters

Nov 04 2009 21:39

Im not sure. The engineering website has not been updated in a long time - http://www.cgcu.net/about/committees (at the time of writing Mark Mearing Smith is named as pres.

Has it occured to you that the RCSU may be building a new website. That would explain why the old site has been neglected.

Regardless... faculty unions have had it rough in the past few months. The jobs of the two pres are very hard and I think we should respect that.

Nov 05 2009 03:26

@35:

New website? Pff. Look at the PhySoc website and how often that has been updated. Besides, they would probably have made quite a song and dance if they were planning a new one.

Nov 05 2009 08:25

@35:

seeing as the website is fairly new and, as Physics sophomore said, they would've made a big fuss about a new one, i doubt that. cheers for point out CGCU's lack of commitment, too.

the job of pres is not hard, ask most of the previous ones (as i just did) and they'll tell you that. in addition, times have rarely been easier for them to cruise on so much successful history, so why they're unable to do so is beyond me. and if the RCSU doesn't stage a science challenge this year (i haven't heard of anything being confirmed yet, but a voice from charity at shell says they haven't been asked for money yet...wtf?!??!!) then a big fat NO CONFIDENCE to KATYANIYANIYANI and AFONSO.

btw i googled AFONSO. what was the name of his oh-so-amazing website that he likes to parade around on his CV? load of bs if you ask me

Nov 05 2009 10:47

I may have missed something but apart from a heavily biased article in felix I fail to see where CGCU is doing so badly this year. Thanks for pointing out that the committee page needs updating, I'll get on to changing that, but I don't think that updating a website is the be all and end all of a Faculty Union's success.

We have had an event every week so far and it continues like that for the rest of the term. Most of these events have had well over 200 attendees.

We have filled all of our positions for the first time ever and had twice as many people run for council as positions available. RCSU only managed to get one person to run for their four seats.

We are engaging in Welfare Campaigns and (for the most part) working as a team. As far as I can see it CGCU is doing far better than in previous years. The actions and continued dedication of my fantastic committee speak louder than any foul-mouthers be they on Live! or in felix.

However, if there is anywhere that you really think we could be doing better you can post your suggestions below or email them to .

Thankyou.

@ Kirsty Patterson

what about the ?7.5k loss made on the masquerade ball? what kind of a ludicrous idea is a masquerade ball in the first place?

Nov 05 2009 14:07

I've seen nothing to indicate a ?7.5k loss so far but am happy to be corrected. The loss (which could be around ?4k) is regretable but was based on the fact that a similar 'ludicrous' event last year made a ?2k profit.

We based attendance figures on the same number of engineers attending as last year and only marginally increased the ticket price (?5 extra for dinner as last years dinner was ran at a loss and ?1 extra for ents as we actually had an ents lineup rather than last years rather less appealing affair of two student djs). Naively we anticipated that a headline act at only ?1 more on tickets than the previous year would help sell tickets.

I don't think any of these assumptions were unreasonable ahead of the event. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. However, this is not something we are incapable of recovering from and will not inhibit our ability to run events throughout the year. In fact, why not head over to the Bonfire Night Bar Night this evening in the Union Bar to see for yourself.

Nov 05 2009 14:10

Hmm, not according to my budget.

Nov 05 2009 14:13

As much as I respect all the hard work you have put in. CGCU is not even in the same league as the RCSU.

Moving on when will the lord mayors show be and whoes your sponsor?

Nov 05 2009 14:16

a 'similar' event that didn't include a headlining band nobody had heard of for ?7k...

regardless, it doesnt make the idea any less ludicrous. poll the students (not the hacks on live) and see what they think for yourself.

if mike tyson starts selling tickets to watch him wank at madison square garden, and it sells out, it doesnt make the idea any less ludicrous. get it?

hindsight IS a wonderful thing, but entirely unnecessary in this case. i will check out the bonfire night, i think that's a much better idea and i hope it goes well!

Nov 05 2009 15:46

We are not attending the Lord Mayor's Show this year as our sponsor has not yet paid for the last two years and despite a supposed 'five year contract' we were unable to get any money out of them this year.

The near ?5k entry fee for a handful of Guilds Hacks to build some c**p out of balsar wood and parade around on telly for a few fleeting seconds (unless the RCSU Fire Engine is attending in which case the actual Guilds bit gets no television coverage or mention at all) seemed like even more of a waste of money than "a headlining band nobody had heard of".

The committee decided that our efforts and money were better placed in running events that both benefit and appeal to a larger group of engineering students. You'll find that the CGCU Beer Festival, planned for the same day, will probably attract far more engineers than building a float to walk through the streets of London.

Nov 05 2009 16:15

Why isnt that live's headline. "Guilds has given up on the lord mayor show"

Nov 05 2009 16:32

at last! well done kirsty! that beats every CGCU president that i've come across.

i would rather watch paint dry than the lord mayor's show, and spending any money on something only 5 students at imperial know or care about is money wasted. i commend you for shooting down that load of tosh, FINALLY

47. Wordy
Nov 05 2009 17:39

@Big J #46

At one point the LMS was seen as the "jewel in the crown" for CGCU. Could the same thing happen else where?

Nov 06 2009 08:59

@47

not sure what planet you live on, or how much crack you've been taking, but the lord mayor s**t was never the jewel in anybody's crown. go poll the undergrads, i've said it before and i'll say it again. bet you less than 5/100 will have even heard of it. of those, most will laugh at you if you tell them cgcu used to waste money on it
