Sen Ganesh, ICU's new President has signalled his intention to increase the number of sabattical officers. Mr Ganesh said that he felt that with the mergers of recent years, ICU's remit had grown without an adequate increase in staffing, and that this needed to be redressed.
There is, however, some uncertainty as to how Mr Ganesh intends to increase the number of sabbaticals. It is understood that he is at least contemplating a wacky plan proposed by Lorne McEwan (last year's Medic President) to make CCU Presidents sabbaticals and abolish the DPCS and DPEW positions. Another option is to have a Deputy President (Overseas Students). Cynics have suggested that this last post would be better named "Deputy President (India Soc)".
Increasing ICU's headcount will be no simple task. Certainly hiring of sabbaticals is cheaper, but this needs to be counterbalanced with the added continuity provided by permanent staff members - such as the every wonderful Mandy. On the other hand, some over-political union hacks have always been passionate about having sabbatical officers on the principal that the union should be run by students as much as possible.
Mr Ganesh has admitted to fearing a backlash over his plans from Andy Heeps...
