Imperial College was last night defeated in the Quarter Finals of this year's University Challenge series in a tough competition against Emmanuel College, Cambridge.
Despite a strong start, which saw Imperial with 45 points and Emmanuel with -5, the Cambridge team were just too much for Imperial Amit's so-far impressive warriors to handle and just seven minutes into the show the scores were tied once again.
The teams then jostled for the lead, getting a starter question each, but Emmanuel eventually edged into the lead and continued to widen the gap for the remainder of the programme.
The final score was an incredible 275 points to Emmanuel and just 160 points to Imperial, however this is just 15 points less than Imperial's winning score in their first-round win against Southampton.
Speaking to Live! this morning, team captain Gilead Amit said that "Emmanuel are an incredibly strong team who are preternaturally fast on the buzzers". He continued, "we like to think we gave them a run for their money, though, as the combined score for that match is the highest so far in the competition".
The programme was shown live in Imperial College Union, which transferred coverage to the larger dBs nightclub due to the popularity of the show with students on previous occasions. The Union also sold drinks at sports-night prices.
In a twist on previous formats of the show, Imperial will have another chance to break through to the semi-final on Monday 8th March. This will undoubtedly also be screened in the Union bars.
If you missed the show you can catch it on BBC iPlayer until next Monday (22nd February).
