The change to the structure of the British Universities Sports Association (BUSA) leagues, rushed through at the end of last year, will result in IC teams having to spend an extra £20,000 in transport costs.
BUSA's plans were supposed to reduce the overall transport costs for teams. However London teams will be disadvantaged by the system. Marie Nicholaou, last year's Chair of ICU's Athletics Clubs Committee said that the changes were forced through by large Universities outside London.
Under the new system, the London region has been merged with the rest of the South East. This means that IC teams will be obliged to travel further outside the City to teams such as Portsmouth and Reading. This will inevitably lead to higher transport costs - and is worse for London clubs as other teams have cheaper access to coaches, etc. Dave Parry, ICU's Finance Manager estimates that the additional transportation costs will be "about £20,000".
There is some concern that the additional costs may force ICU to reduce subsidies (currently 100%) for transport to sports fixtures. The issue will be debated at ICU Council on Tue 10 October at 6pm in the Union Dining Hall.
