It is a long established fact that geekiness and Union politics make for a rather unpredictable cocktail. However, the latest altercations with the ICU web server have left many bewildered.
When the "allsop.su.ic.ac.uk", the ICU web server was hacked last week, the web editors (Steve Little, Sam Sharpe and Etienne Pollard) were forced to wipe the hard disk clean and install a new version of Debian GNU/Linux from scratch. (They also had to execute a to-do list of security fixes that was over 2 pages; it would have been much easier for them to simply use a really secure operating system ).
Unfortunately, the web editors have taken this opportunity to engage in a bizarre display of Union hack-ery combined with geekiness. The server was named in "allsop" after Eric Allsop - a Guildsman / rugby lout who was ICU President the year before the infamous Andy Heeps ("when dinosaurs walked the Earth...). Given the web server's new fresh start, the editors decided to rename it after a more recently controversial President, Tasha Newton (famous for taking C&GCU to a disciplinary over a bathtub...) However, they found that "newton" was already taken by the Physics department, who have a server called "newton.ph.ic.ac.uk". It appears that the College's DNS servers are unable to handle the same hostname being used on multiple sub-domains. (Non-geek translation: College computers are poo.)
So, the hack-ers (in both senses of the word, geddit? ;-) decided to pick another colourful character. They went for Dave "Fantastic" Hellard, the random member of ICU's bar staff who somehow managed to get elected President - and incidentally the last President to attempt to strip CCUs of their clubs and societies. Unfortunately, while Mr Hellard was a "unique" character, few current students of the College (other than Andy Heeps) have any idea who he is - since he was President back in 1998-1999. It is understood that some senior hacks pleaded that the web editors go for "tasha.su.ic.ac.uk", but they were too late; ICT had gone ahead and changed the DNS entry.
An interesting observation is that both Messrs Hellard and Allsops were officially geeks themselves, in the sense that they were both DoC students. (Well actually, Mr Hellard doesn't really count as he was an RCS creature doing a course called "Mathematics with Computer Science", which some Maths students erroneously seem to think is really called "Joint Maths and Computing." Cheeky bastards!)
The bottom line is that some sort of Union web server functionality has returned via the http://hellard.su.ic.ac.uk/ URL, but it is understood that C&G Media Group will be "waiting and seeing" before migrating back.
