The Imperial College Union web server 'hellard' (formerly 'allsop') has returned to the land of the living. Imperial College bureaucracy, in the form of Information and Communication Technologies (formerly CCS) appears to have finally processed the required forms and the jet-black (probably because of its evil nature) machine has been allowed to peek out at the outside world.
The server was originally shut down in early December after the machine's security was compromised. While City & Guilds College Union websites have running on a backup server most club and society websites were plunged into darkness (and despair) for a month. The server - which is now accessible at its 'normal' address of http://www.su.ic.ac.uk - now sports a page titled 'Frequently Asked Questions about the Union Web Server Service Interruption' which provides some of the information that was available to readers of Live! nearly a month ago.
"I now declare the union web server open for business," said Sam Sharpe, one of the ICU web-editors. However the C&GCU Media Group has confirmed that they will not be migrating to the 'new' server immediately. Some esoteric technical issue is believed to remain to be resolved before C&GCU sites can be transferred to the machine. "We don't want to move until we're sure that everything is going to work," said Oliver Pell, speaking for the Media Group, "and we can't be sure of anything until hellard's [the server's] set-up is complete." Mr Pell confirmed that C&GCU was still planning to re-launch the Internship Centre website in a few weeks on the ICU server but commented that "we are prepared to use our backup machine if necessary".
