In a slightly bizarre meeting of City & Guilds College Union Council last night the Union's sovereign body decided that it would hold elections for a new name.
The decision of ICU Council to create 'Faculty Student Associations has left the constituent parts of Imperial College Union in a state of some confusion over what must be done in preparation for next year. City & Guilds College Union will be holding elections for positions within the student association for the Faculty of Engineering (synchronised with the Royal School of Mines CSC elections). Faced with the niggling issue of what to call themselves, C&GCU Council decided that the issue should be settled by a referendum to be held at the same time as the elections for officers.
However, no one could think of a suitable yes-or-no question to ask. Faced with a potential impasse, the Council choose to adopt the slightly strange notion of 'electing' a name from a series of options. Nomination papers for the name will go up along with those for officers, and will probably require a proposer and 10 seconders. It's too early to tell what students will choose to call their 'union' (faculty student's association...) but the current City & Guilds College Union is believed to be a strong favourite amongst many C&GCU officers. "We should keep the C&GCU brand!" exclaimed C&G Motor Club Captain David Lamb, while C&GCU Treasurer Oliver Pell observed that "the cost of re-branding would be horrendous."
