Sam Sharpe resigns

Baldy decides to actually spend some time on his degree..
Andy finally hits his target...

Sam Sharpe, the friendly, if ineffective Chair of ICU Council has finally resigned.

Mr Sharpe, who was a popular Deputy President (Clubs & Societies) last year had been under a lot of pressure for what were generally perceived to be his poor chairing skills. He had been contemplating resigning for a long time as he felt he couldn't afford the time while in his final year.

The final move was in response to the antics of Tuesday night. The meeting was abandoned after quorum was challenged - leaving the Union's constitutional review in tatters. Mr Sharpe said that he felt on refelection that the meeting was actually quorate because two ordinary members (Lorne McEwan and Etienne Pollard) had not attended for two meetings (and hence, by definition, resigned automatically) - meaning that quorum would have been reduced by 4.

However, C&G hack, Mustafa Arif, pointed out that the ordinary members would only have resigned after the end of the second meeting that they were absent from (which was Tuesday night) and could only be recognized as having resigned by Council at the following meeting.

Nevertheless, Mr Sharpe, said he was glad to be able to finally focus on his studies. He will still continue as C&GCU Council Chair.

This is a bit of a shock. Sam's always been an entertaining chair.

Who's going to take over? Personally, I nominate a Mr. A. Heeps.

Feb 07 2002 16:27

Oh no you don't. I'm proposing him already. So neer.

Feb 07 2002 16:27

That's funny, because i know he has approached some people looking for a proposer.

Feb 07 2002 16:29

Damn, Mustafa types faster than me!

Feb 07 2002 16:30

I tell you what, Mustafa. You propose him, I'll second him. Whether he likes it or not. How's that?

Feb 07 2002 16:31

Stuart says "This is a bit of a shock"

????

You must be the only person who Sam didn't tell he wanted to resign.

Feb 07 2002 16:49

He didn't tell me at all. I feel left all out now, and I might go and cry in a corner. How could you do this to me, Sam?

Feb 07 2002 16:50

Ah well ...

Anyway, will Mr. Heeps stand or not?

Feb 07 2002 17:07

Go and cry in the corner Stuart. See if we care.

PRESS STATEMENT

Speaking after the resignation of ICU Council Chair Samuel Sharpe, Andy Heeps said: "I wish to extend my condolences to Sam at this very trying time. Now is not the time to consider the succession of who will sit at SAC and Exec and generally terrorise the sabbaticals until they actually do something for the student population; instead we must think of Sam and his family, especially his two children, Samson and Samantha.

His spokesman later said: "If Mr Heeps were to become Chairman of ICU Council, Executive and the Student Activities Committee, he would have to withdraw from any active part in the NUS Referendum. He may well take soundings from his friends, colleagues and DavID Francis before deciding whether or not to stand"

Mr Heeps is 62.

I just know, before this is over, the sabbs are gonna need a whole lot of serious therapy.

Feb 07 2002 17:25

Sam Sharpe has been unavailable for comment, as he is spending some personal time with his Family.

His office would like to reassure the public, that the Education of his children will continue at Eton and Rodean, as the money accumulated during Mr Sharpe's Sabbatical Office will adequately provide for their needs for a long time into the future.

I'm sure Mr Sharpe would like to thank all his loyal supporters, and reassure his subjects that most people were consulted over his planned lifestyle changes, however due to temporal practicalities it was not possible to consult everyone.

Mr Sharpe has the hair of a 62yr. old

as everyone who knows knows, sam has resigned from council so that he has more time to have sex with people.

everything is just a testosterone issue, boys, get over it!

Feb 08 2002 10:57

And not just people, rumours have it that Sam is so desperate for release that he has even contemplated turning Welsh. Although God knows where he will find sheep in London.

Reports from Camp Paul J are that Paul J himself feels rather guilty, fearing that comments previously made on Live! lead to the Council Guru's decision to quit.

Nah Paul,

I know i had shortcomings, you know i had shortcomings. That had very little to do with quitting. Like i already decided before i heard about the "were we quorate, weren't we quorate" debate.

In the end i'm here to get a degree, and much as i would like to involve myself in politics, i really don't have the time any more. C'est la vie.

I nominate John Durrel - shame he's no longer there.

Is my interpretation flawed or does "This Constitution may be amended by resolution of the Council, passed by a two-thirds majority at two successive meetings, not less than fifteen and not more than forty College days apart, with the approval of the Imperial College Council." mean that fifteen clear College Days must be between the two necessary Council meetings for change to be approved? If so, there were only 14 between the first and second for the constitutional ammendments...

say that in council then

Feb 11 2002 01:04

Alas I have no speaking rights anymore at Council. Best left to those who do :)

Feb 11 2002 11:12

Technically Rob's right; the council opened 4 and a half hours prior to the actual 15 College Day deadline.

HOWEVER - nobody challenged it. It's an intersting constitutional point - is the word "consecutive" more important or less important than the date deadline?

Feb 11 2002 11:19

What's important is that a meeting can actually take place and reach a 'natural' conclusion for once.

Typically, there are only two nights a week convenient to hold a council meeting. I am sure the powers that be had their reasons for choosing Tuesday instead of waiting for the following week. Can you guess what it is yet!?

Feb 11 2002 12:25

No - tell me?

Feb 11 2002 12:26

So, we could make some progress Andy.

A concept apparently lost on the people who call every detail of the constitution into account at council these days.

Feb 11 2002 13:13

Wasn't me that called Quorum. I quite wanted to see that constitution go through.

However, I did find it - perculiar - the our President had not even read the rules and therefore the consequences of calling a referendum before putting the paper to Council, so I thought it wise to point it out.

Rules are there for a reason David.

Feb 11 2002 13:45

generally to allow them to be broken, rumour has it.

Well maybe it's time someone did something about the rules that have been broken.....

"generally to allow them to be broken, rumour has it"

Planning some changes then, Idris?

I agree with Andy (which I appear to be making a habit of), no point in having rules and not following them, but from a legal point of view (since that's my thing these days) the term consecutive is of greater significance, particularly since we are only talking about a matter of hours.

Feb 12 2002 01:40

Exec have never played by the rules, even when I had to trundle along and agree to that unfeasibly large rubber-stamp being operated every Monday...

Enough of my whining...

Do YOU want devolved union government or not? If you do, start chastising your CCUs and make sure you get your voice heard and noted. Alternatively (for South Ken anyway) call a referendum!

After all, it's tradition! :)

Feb 12 2002 01:42

And if not, go to King's or join the Welsh Labour Party!
