This year saw the battle hotting up for the winner of the C&G Egg Race. With two Aero Eng teams, and the legendary Glider Team, most people thought it would be a walkover by the people in the know. However, after a nail biting finish, the Mechanical Engineers (Mech Eng III) won the coveted C&G Egg race trophy, with runners up from a multi disciplinary fresher's team called "Selkirk Smashes".
Andy Chipling, star of the Paper Aircraft Association started the afternoon off with an introduction to the task in hand, and some advice on what and what not to do. The teams then set to work in the Mech Eng foyer, with the materials supplied by the C&G Events Team, and a superb selection of food and drink that was included in the entry price.
After 2 hours and 10 minutes of hard work, and bargaining with the C&G Events Team running the extra materials "shop", all the contraptions were ready for testing from the great height of the Queen's Tower. Thirteen entrants braved their way to the balcony, from where they proceeded to throw their odd contraptions off towards the IC Library. Highlights at this point have to include one which turned round and hit the Queen's Tower breaking it's egg, and the other which travelled a huge distance - but unfortunately in the wrong direction.
In the end it was down to the last two teams to show what good Engineers and Scientists we are at IC, and it was Mech Eng III who narrowly beat the Selkirk Smashes. The paper aircraft competition followed, despite the onset of rain, and there was a clear winner in this category.
"We'd like to thank Andy Chipling," said a member of the C&G events team, "for giving up his afternoon to advise the teams and judge the competition." After another great success for this ever-popular event, many people will already be looking forward to next year.
