Students across college are being warned of possible riots happening tomorrow.
Apparently, a protest of some kind is planned for the Royal Albert Hall and surrounding areas. Extra security measures on hand around local tube stations mean that students will have to plan ahead and leave early to arrive in College on time.
Unfortunately, nobody this reporter has spoken to appears to know exactly what the protest is for or about. There is no readily accessible information on college sites - internal or external. News sites are silent on the matter, as is the site of the Met.
What is going on?
Protests of a political nature are fairly regularly held near college premises. The high concentration in the area of embassies and consular deputations - many of which are from countries with brutal and despotic regimes - means this is inevitable. Students and staff from the Huxley building are regularly treated to protests since the Bangladeshi Embassy is right opposite.
Famously, last year also saw noisy protests from the supporters of Falun Gong when the Chinese vice-premier Hu Jintao visited college. While college media including IC Reporter were content to describe the protesters as loud supporters and enthusiastic admirers of the Chinese government, the many students affected by the noise and the crowding of the protest knew better.
The precise words used at the time by offical Chinese media to describe the event were "Chinese students and scholars at the Imperial College were excited at the news about Vice-President Hu Jintao's visit to the college and gathered at the entrance of the college early in the morning to express their warm welcome to his arrival".
In any case, what is happening tomorrow?
