The Imperial College Union budget was approved by the Executive Committee this evening, ready to be presented to Council at its next meeting on Tuesday. After a small decrease (taking into account inflation) in the Union's subvention (the large chunk on money given by to the Union by College) club and society budgets have suffered cuts of nearly 10% in their funding.
The cuts are surprisingly unevenly inflicted, with clubs in the Athletic Clubs Committee getting a small increase while the Royal School of Mines has suffered a 60% budget cut overall. High profile casualties within C&G include the very successful Active group, which has seen its budget cut by nearly 90% and the C&G Motor Club. A lethal 65% cut for the C&G Media Group was overturned by the Executive this evening, leaving the publishers of Live! with only small wounds to lick as they go into next year. "Obviously we're delighted that they [ICU Exec] recognised the C&G Media Group's success as both a service and a club," said C&GCU Treasurer Oliver Pell, adding: "in fact, we're almost as delighted as we are dismayed at the perverse cuts to C&G Active".
Overall, Mr Pell estimated that City & Guilds suffered an overall budget cut of around 12%, a level he described as "survivable." C&G figures this journalist spoke to were strangely in agreement that, for the first time in several months, the whole budget slashing business was "not entirely David Francis' fault." This is perhaps a response to Mr Francis' comment at the meeting of the Student Activities Committee (SAC) that first reviewed club budgets yesterday that "No doubt it [Live!] will blame me." The majority of club anger seems instead to be directed against Deputy President (Finance & Services) Ben Hawkins, which makes a change.
