Professor Frank Leppington, a former Head of the Department of Mathematics, has today taken up the post of Principal of the Faculty of Physical Sciences. He succeeds Professor John Pendry who is stepping down and returning to research in the Department of Physics.
Professor Leppington joined Imperial College in 1964 with a PhD from the University of Manchester. He was appointed Head of the Department of Mathematics in 1986, but returned to teaching and research in 1992. He is slated to hold the post of Faculty Principal for two years before retiring. Professor Pendry, the outgoing Principal who held the position since last August said that "much has been accomplished but more remains to be done. Frank has my support and best wishes as he takes over this challenging brief."
The Faculty of Physical Sciences includes the Departments of Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics as well as the Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine. The new Physical Sciences Faculty Student Association recently held some elections.
