IC Facing Halls Crisis

Imperial College could have a deficit of nearly 300 beds in halls of residence by 2003/4.
How college would like you to think of Halls of Residence.

Live! has learnt that Imperial College is planning to sell Clayponds, leaving the College with nearly 300 more Freshers than beds in halls by 2003/4. Imperial College Council approved the sale of Clayponds last week in a move that is expected to raise up to £8m. Disturbingly, last Wednesday Sharine Brown (Residence’s Manager) explained at the Rector’s Committee for Student Residences that student places lost during the Southside refurbishment could be made up at Clayponds, suggesting that even Residences do not know about the plan.

The same document at College Council also suggested that the mews houses located around Southside will also be sold, affecting the RSM Motor Club, Underwater Club and Windsurfing Club who use the garages in these houses. “This contradicts what has been mentioned to the Union previously,” wrote David Francis, ICU Deputy President (Education & Welfare) in an e-mail today, “that the houses will remain College property by may be used for accommodation for visiting professors.”

Combined with the planned sale of Garden Hall, figures from Ben Hawkins, ICU Deputy President (Finance & Services) suggest that the college will have nearly 300 fewer places in hall than incoming Freshers by 2003/4. In previous years there has always been a surplus of several hundred places which are taken up by Re-apps, Assistant Wardens and Sub-wardens.

An emergency meeting of the ICU Executive Committee this evening expressed concern about the lack of consultation with students regarding the plans. “It seems that the College is run by a bunch of muppets and the Union has exposed a fuck up,” said Council Chair and former Union President Andy Heeps, “I thought they were incompetent in my day, but this really takes the biscuit.”

I remember that damn picture in the handbook that came to prospective students saying how great halls were.

What a surprise when I finally arrived at FK then, to find that concrete hovels and illegally disproportionate kitchens were a way of life in the Capital.

Bah!

This is so typical of Imperial. It does not surprise me in the least, just highlights once again the fact that IC doesn't give a damn about the students:it's hard enough trying to find somewhere decent and affordable to live in London, and even worse for those of us who come from overseas. Watch out Imperial, you might find applications (and yes, the fees too!..i know this is kinda more important for you) dropping off as students start to favour universities that cater for their students in a proper fashion. (Many colleges in Cambridge and Oxford provide uni accomodation for their undergrads all the way through the course, and you don't see them selling off their assets for immediate financial gains). I won't be recommending IC to friends or relatives because this is not a matter to be taken lightly!

Good Idea Sykes. This is just typical of your tiny little mind being more concerned with $ signs than common sense. When IC is exclusively a university for foreign/rich students you will be long gone and some other poor bugger will have to pick up the pieces. Go back to selling Drugs you are not Welcome any more.

The Rector and his special decision-making friends should all spend a week in the luxury of Imperial's halls. Then he would not be so bloody foolish with his important 'improvement' ideas. But I'm sure he'll find plenty more to sell and plenty more to waste the money on
