As previously reported some C&G officers had expressed concern that the proposed order of nearly 300 burgers would prove insufficient to cater for the ravenous appetites of Imperial’s students. These concerns were allayed in a rather unfortunate fashion when C&G’s burger supplier decided to deliver 8 crates, rather than 8 boxes of burgers, leaving C&GCU with 1300 burgers to unload in one evening.
Rapid negotiations between the caterers and C&G Honorary Secretary Neil Madhvani apparently ensued, with the ultimate result that C&G was left desperately trying to sell as many burgers as possible, though some financial fudge left the money situation in a state Treasurer Oliver Pell described as “manageable.” The end result was over 400 burgers sold throughout the evening, a massive increase on predictions.
The Barbeque was originally scheduled as a 100th birthday celebration for Boanerges (Bo’), one of C&G’s vintage vehicle mascots. Bo’ was actually driven into the quad for the event, much to the surprise of Beit security who apparently hadn’t been informed.
Overall the event was pronounced a tremendous success, although whether it will be repeated is an open question. Over recent weeks C&G officers have begun to sound a bit like officials from the Ministry of Defence constantly talking about "overstretch" and bemoaning lack of manpower and resources.
