Much like the dinosaurs walked this earth millions of years ago, IC is shortly to disappear from the face of the planet, but this time it will not be an asteroid that is responsible. Instead Sir Richard Sykes, the last rector of the educational establishment formally known as “IC”, has decreed that the name can only be shortened to “Imperial”.
January 2003 will also see the loss of the well known mouthful of a name “Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine”. This will be changing to the trendier and more pronounceable name of “Imperial College London”.
This was all confirmed by a confidential document discovered by a Live! reader recently on the College Intranet system called “Intrinsic”; which is apparently too cool to see a name change. However regular web users will find that the “IC” – sorry “Imperial” homepage will change it’s domain name. The new address, *www.imperial.ac.uk*, is already up and running, and it is thought the old domain will continue to run for internal use, but will not be published to external parties.
The name changing farce at Imperial follows on from the re-launch of ICU last year, with a brand new logo and brand name – “The Union”. There is also a rumour that ICU, sorry “The Union”, will be forced to destroy all their regalia that currently features the letters ICUK. However nobody in the union would comment on the situation.
