Slowly but surely, Live!’s campaign to save the comma in “Imperial College, London” has been moving forward towards its ultimate goal of having every student and member of staff sign up. The petition recently passed the all-important 200-signature mark, fuelling rumours that it could suddenly jump even further upwards once term begins.
The comments left on the petition so far are surely indicative of the deep feeling that the comma engenders amongst Imperial’s students and staff. “You can take our comma, but you can never take our freedom!” commented Jonathan Pillai, number 102 to sign. Nicola Diplock’s more emotional “don’t take it away from us!!! sob sob” also appears to echo many people’s emotions on this issue. In contrast, the first half a dozen to sign the petition were remarkably boring, with even Mafia Arif failing to make a smug remark as the first person to sign.
