Following a (second) Emergency General Meeting of Imperial College Union on Monday ICU Council have called a referendum of the student body on the issue of the proposed merger with University College London. The question to be asked or the precise timetable have not yet been determined but the referendum will be used to determine Union policy on the merger. Unlike the separate issue of tuition fees student opinion at IC appears to be both mixed and apathetic with no clear consensus over what stance the Union should take.
In related news, a General Meeting of University College London Union has voted to hold a referendum of its membership on the merger issue. Approximately 550 UCL Union members were present at the meeting yesterday. The response from UCL students to the merger appears to be generally more hostile than at IC, possibly because many appear to view the merger as more of a IC take-over.
