Boanerges, the City & Guilds College students' mascot was involved in an accident in Brighton yesterday, after the annual veteran car run.

Yesterday was Bo's most important day of the year, the annual RAC veteran car run from Hyde Park to Brighton. It is understood that the journely itself went well under the capable hands of the Bo' Driver. Unfortunately, Bo' was involved in an accident in Brighton.

Current Guilds President, Sumeet Bhalla, confirmed that the damage was limited and of a 'cosmetic' nature as it was caused by another veteran car careering into the back of Bo'. Mr Bhalla steadfastly stood by the Bo' Driver and denied speculation that Mr Lehmann's notorious lunitic driving style was to blame. He suggested that the driver of the other veteran vehicle was "uncoordinated".

Bo' is insured by the Union for £30,000. While the insurance is welcome, given today's incident, it has raised concerns over its appropriateness. Mr Bhalla expressed concern that the insured value of the car was far too low. (The car's estimated value runs to millions of pounds and the most recent offer made to College for its purchase was in the order of £12 million.)

The incident has put a dampener on an otherwise successfull centenary year. It is understood that it the damage is unlikely to upset plans for this week's Lord Mayor's Show float which is supposed to showcase Bo'.

If someone offered 12 million pounds for it, why on earth didn't we sell it?!?

It's just an old car! The money would have been much more useful!

Can I suggest that we sell Bo and buy 600 new minibuses.

Nov 04 2002 20:51

I here the climbing club are aafter transportation this weekend....

We can't sell Bo' - he's part of our history and has considerable sentimental value to the Union! And Bo' is a "he", not an "it"!

Nov 05 2002 00:15

Bo' can't be sold because he was bequeathed to the College to be maintained by the students in perpetuity.

And the veteran vehicles are all cool, anyway.

The insurance issue has nothing to dow ith the incident that occured at the weekend. Bo' is insured third party, and the French Driver who hit us while we were standstill at a set of traffic lights will pay, after I have had a quote for the repair of the body damage that occured.

aqeel, I suggets you get a life (minibusses are rubbish), and may I add Bo' is not worth £12 million.

Nov 05 2002 12:44

Dan L:

Precisely my point. That old car isn't worth 12 million pounds. So if someone actually offered anything in the millions of pounds, we'd be doing a good deal to sell it.

Sell it. Buy an old 737 instead for cheap and cheerful student transport all over Europe... ;-)

And of course, IT is an IT - a car. IT might be a SHE (being named after Bo Derek) but definitely not a HE.

Robert,

It would be nice if you would submit your e-mail address, but anyway:

£12 million has never been offered for Bo'. This is purely heresay. If we were to sell Bo' (which will never happen) it would cost a similar amount to buy another Brighton Car - so what would be the point.

Basically people can say what they want but if you have any knowledge of veteran vehicles you will realise they have no definite value.

Finally if you want to come and look at the archives you will find out that Bo' is a "he" since a vote was taken and the result was he was male. Derrick is also a male motorbike. Also Bo' is not named after the actress Bo' Derrick, but in fact from the bible - Mark Ch 3, Verse 17. See our website for more information

Not wishing to be pedantic, but...

Boanerges means "sons of thunder" so surely "he" should be a "they" :)

Bo is rubbish, scrap it now

Nov 05 2002 13:44

I can't believe we're actually discussing this but I'll stick my oar in anyway.

1. As has been pointed out, we are not allowed to sell it.

2. £12 mn was offered during my tenure as C&G Union President. The College turned it down (as they see the CCU vintage vehicle mascots as a form of publicity) before I was told the offer had been made. (To be fair they probably also know that we can't sell it anyway.)

3. Boanerges was named after the biblical quote stated above. However it is singular and masculine as determined by a UGM vote in the 1950s. (I do believe, however, that Bo' was considered to be feminine in the preceeding decades.)

4. Bo' was not named after Bo Derek. However "Derrick" our vintage motorcycle mascot which often provides Bo' with company, had its name inspired by the 1978 Tarzan movie - hence the possible confusion. (Other name combinations considered at the same UGM were Bo'/Lockes, Bo'/Peeps and Bo'/Geste.)

Don't ask me why I know the above. Its probably Hamish Common's fault.

Its still rubbish

Rob Park... "not wishing to be pedantic"...

There is no price to be put for the many generations of students that have looked after Bo every single week. Bo is priceless!

16. Sam
Nov 06 2002 14:24

You're absolutely wrong Atul,

from what I've heard the price put on the students who lovingly look after Bo is £15,000 a year, courteousy of Sir Richard

17. Sam
Nov 06 2002 14:29

In fact, lets be totally spurious...

lets say 8 students work on Bo per year, that's £120,000...

and she's been owned for 68 years,

i make that a little over £8million's worth of Students

Nov 06 2002 15:21

You have to remember its a buyers' market. Not many people want these old cars (they're not exactly practical). Those who want tone to work one would probably pay no more than around the £50,000 mark. Anyone who wants to pay more would want it for some sentimental (read silly) purpose - and such offers are only made once in a blue moon. In short, even if it was sold, I doubt you'd get more than a few tens of thousands for it. (Probably about the same money you would need to buy a replacement veteran car to allow the students involved to continue to take part in veteran vehicle maintenance and rallying.)

I spent three years working on Bo and drove him on the 1981 Brighton run. It is pointless trying to put a monetary value on that experience or Bo himself unless you also put a monetary value on the good P.R. Bo brings to Imperial.

For the life of me, I cannot understand why you have the transport problem referred to in this discussion. Imperial has a worldwide reputation, multinational companies queue up to employ Imperial graduates. You are in the middle of one of the richest capitols in the world. Surely you can find a sponsor for a minibus? My local Scout group managed!

Selling your heritage to fix a problem that will reoccur in a few years time is not the solution.

As Bo' Driver in 2002, I fully agree.

Well said that man.

As the man who crashed it you should jolly well shut up...

Have you filled in an Accident form yet?

Sam,

I did not crash Bo'. I was crashed into. This is quite different. The Union have been informed offically. Other than that, there is no need for any further comment.

Sam, stop winding Dan up. I think he's had enough stick already this week :-)

Dan,

You seem awfully touchy...

are you sure you're not hiding something?
