After several weeks of uncertaincy and the expenditure of vast amounts of time and effort Live! learnt this morning that the vaunted merger between IC and UCL has been cancelled. Opposition from academic staff, most significantly at UCL, is understood to have been the key component in leading to the merger being called off.
The Guardian reported today that the merger had been called off, and subsequent statements from college staff have confirmed this. An e-mail distributed from the Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering to staff says "you will be interested to know that the proposed merger has been called off!!" The e-mail goes on to thank members of staff for their assistance with "this interesting exercise."
A statement from UCL said that "a number of areas for future collaboration have been identified, but the overal conclusion is that the best interests of the two institutions are not served by a formal merger." The statement goes on to state that UCL is now recommencing its search for a new Provost. Imperial College have issued an identical press statement.
The strongest opposition appears to have come from UCL academics. Sir Derek Roberts, Provost of UCL, is quoted by the Guardian as saying "an enormous amount of antipathy and ill-feeling has been generated by various groups. I am quite disgusted and amazed at some of my colleagues." Student opposition at Imperial has been comparatively mild with only an extremely poor quality advertisement in Felix last week to show for itself.
UCLU was quick to claim credit for the merger's collapse. Media and Communications Officer Pete Higgins said "this is a victory for the UCL union campaign against the merger...The two institutions were too different and should stand alone as excellent institutions." Imperial College Union could not be reached for comment.
