Christmas showcase extravaganza

Dec 11 2002 00:57

Live! has learnt the union is planning to relaunch Ents with a Christmas carnival style event
Will the Christams tree finally look like this?

Friday evenings have so far at the union this year been.... well pretty rubbish and empty of punters. So it is probably about time that the new ICU Ents manager has decided to relaunch entertainment at the union.

Instead of a bland cheesy Friday, this week punters are being promised a "Christmas Showcase" evening to remember. With the likes of Mikee B from Radio 1 as the major attraction in Db's for the evening, drinks promotions, and music till 3am, some might say it has possible potential. One union hack told Live!: “This is possibly the rebirth of Union Ents".

Despite recent rumour about a rift with the new Ents manager and DramSoc in Felix, it seems that the Concert hall will be open as well. This is good news for all those die hard cheese fans, who will apparently be guaranteed a “Winter Wonderland Disco” from the "Cheese Crew".

The preparations have already started in the form of a 20ft Christmas Tree which arrived from Imperial at Wye this afternoon, and is now taking pride of place in the quad. More Christmas decorations have been promised as the week goes on, and tickets for the event are on sale from ICU reception.

I think ICU needs a coffee bar in the building. ULU have one, why can't we?

Keep the bar's open all day? :) And clean the pumps, then the union may become a viable alternative to southside then a (decent) club...

The thing is a coffee bar needs comfy seating... and freshley baked doughnuts (and carrot cake).

I suppose they coudl rearrange the furniture mid afternoon.

Mustafa - if only life revolved around freshly baked doughuts....... trouble is, you'd be the only buyer, and then it wouldn't be profitable

Let IC Catering run it, they are good at making a loss. ;-)

I disagree with the coffee idea - if somebody wants coffee with 'comfy' seating, you could go to:

  • The SCR
  • The JCR (although uncomfortable seating)
  • EEE main entrance
  • Tanaka building (well soon anyway)
  • Starbucks opposite the sandwich shop.

The JCR coffee is disgusting.

The SCR coffee is good, but theoretically off-limits to most students. I believe the EEE coffee lounge will be off-limits to ALL students.

Starbucks is too far away.

Anon - for your interest, if by cleaning the pumps you meant the actual beer lines, the union cleans their's on a much more regular basis than southside

Yours - someone who's worked at both.

So the lines are cleaned with a greater frequency than every other day in the Union? Why does the beer taste so shite then?

The Union also needs to train the bar staff better. It's really not that complex to pour a pint, but the way that certain unnamed barstaff (regular attenders will know who I'm talking about) fuck it up so monumentally, and so regularly is really quite annoying. Little things like pouring to the top of the pint glass, pouring lager without an inch of head, pouring Guinness properly (let it settle - combined with not pouring it to the top of the glass, you end up with about 2/3 of a pint, and a fucking massive head), and not holding the glass by the rim.

Southside manages to get this right, with very little effort (staff training takes about 30 minutes at most) and it would easily beat the Union in popularity if it played music, or if there was anywhere to put a projection screen in the main bar.

Having said all this, I'm looking forward to the new Ents lineup. It's nice to see drinks promotions creeping into the Union. Also, the food situation is better in the Union since the outdoor barbeque was destroyed when someone left the awning out in the gales. It looked a fucking wreck that Sunday morning, but its death has given us half decent food without freezing outside.

Actually.....

The bbq was shut cos of the big fuck-off rats that lurk in the quad by the bins.

The lines are cleaned once a week.

Anyone with a pot be warned.....someone has pissed/spat in every single one.

That's fine... if someone has p1ssed in all 5 of the pots i'm entitled to, i'll bring in another one of them from home...

Mind you, i find that

tetleys + p1ss >= tetleys straight

any day of the week.
